Charminar
The Charminar is located right in the heart of the city Hyderabad. It is one of the most famous landmarks of Telangana, so aptly named, with its structure consisting of four minarets, with a beautiful and famous ‘laad’ or ‘chudi’ market around it. Towards the north of the monument, there are four gateways known as ‘char kaman’ which mark the four directions. The magnificent monument was built by Quli Qutub Shah, to mark the beginning of Hyderabad and the end of a plague from the city. It is believed by many, that the four minarets of the monument stand for the first four prophets of Islam as the structure was built to be a mosque or madarsa.
Ramoji film city
Spread over 2500 acres, the Ramoji Film City was set up by Ramoji Rao, in 1991. It is the perfect place for all cinema lovers. The Ramoji film city can house almost 20 film sets at one time with its name in the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Largest Film Studio Complex. It has various shooting locations like airports, hospitals, landscapes, London Street, Japanese gardens, Hollywood Signage, buildings, and labs. It also promotes several activities like Bungee ejection, football, swinging, and climbing loops, along with studio tours, a movie magic park, a birds park called ‘wings’, and even live shows.
Warangal Fort
The city of Warangal, also known as Oru Kallu meaning ‘single stone’ is home to the prominent architectural feat of Telangana – the Warangal Fort. The fort, which is currently in ruins, once boasted the opulence of the Kakatiyas, with an impressive fortification during the medieval era. The Warangal Fort is known for its four ornamental gates which are now the official emblem of Telangana. The fort was started by Ganpatideva, continued by his daughter Rudrama Devi and was eventually completed by the last Kakatiya ruler Rudradeva 2. The Warangal Fort was attacked several times throughout history- in 1309 by Alauddin Khilji, then by the Qutub Shahi Dynasty, and, later by the Nizams of Hyderabad.
Golconda Fort
Known to be the home of the very renowned and famous Kohinoor Diamond, the Golconda fort is one of the best-preserved monuments of Telangana. It is situated in the western part of Hyderabad with mines known for producing priceless and coveted gems. The fort is rich in architecture, history, and mystery and was built in 1143 under the rule of Kakatiyas and rose to fame during the Qutub Shahi Dynasty in the 1600s. The fort was originally known as “Golla Konda”, which means Shepherd’s hill in Telugu.
Ramappa temple
The Ramappa temple is situated in the city of Warangal. It is devoted to Lord Shiva and is believed to have been constructed for over forty years. It was built during the Kakatiya Dynasty by General Recheria in the reign of ruler Ganpati Deva. The temple is named after the sculptor- Ramappa who built the statue of Lord Shiva. The temple is also called Ramalingeswara temple. The temple is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, declared at the 44th session in China.
Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Devasthanam
Located in Ananthagiri in Vikarabad in Telangana, the Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu. The temple is believed to be installed by Rishi Markandeya in Dwapar Yug according to the Skanda Purana. Sri Nalapur Sitaram Chary is the head priest of this temple.
Ujjaini Mahakali Temple
The history of Ujjaini Mahakali Temple dates back to 1813, when Suriti Appaia, A doli bearer from the military battalion along with his associates went to Mahakali devasthanam in Ujjaini to pray during a cholera epidemic. Later in 1815, an idol of Mahakali was installed in Secunderabad made of wood. During the construction of the inner sanctum, an idol named Manikyalamma was found and installed.
Taj Falaknuma palace
The Taj Falaknuma Palace was built in 1894 and was known to be the home of the Nizam, the richest man in the world at that time. The palace is now one of the most famous luxury hotels with grandeur and opulence rivalling that of the royals. It has 60 rooms and suites that were refurbished by Princess Esra, Nizam’s Turkish Wife.
Salar Jung Museum
Situated on the banks of the Musi river, the Salar Jung Museum is one of the three national museums in the country with 10 acres and 2 floors. The collection inside the museum is owned by only one man named Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, who was previously known as Salar Jung 3. Located at Darushifa, the Salar Jung museum is home to over one million priceless artefacts, paintings, and sculptors. The museum has an excellent library with a huge number of books and manuscripts. The most famous and valuable pieces include- Aurangzeb’s sword, daggers of Shah Jahan and Jehangir, and a painting of Raja Ram Mohan Roy.
Hussain Sagar Lake
The Hussain Sagar Lake is renowned to be the largest artificial lake in Asia. The lake is known for its monolith of Lord Buddha that stands in the centre of the lake, built-in 1992 and inaugurated by the Dalai Lama himself. It is situated on the tributary of the river Musi. Also known as Tank Bund, the lake connects the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. It was built in 1563 by Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah. The Hussain Sagar Lake has been declared as ‘Heart of the World’ by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation for its heart-shaped neckline.
