The Government of Maharashtra, like the other Indian states, is governed by the Indian National Constitution. The Governor of Maharashtra is the head of state, with the Council of Ministers headed by the Chief Minister assisting and advising him.

The Maharashtra Legislature consists of two Houses: the Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) and the Vidhan Parishad (Legislative Council). These houses meet for their legislative sessions regularly in Mumbai and for winter sessions in Nagpur.

The executive authority of the Maharashtra Government is headed by the CM of Maharashtra and exercised by the cabinet ministers, who are chosen from among the 288 members of the legislative assembly for the tenure of five years. The state also has 48 seats in the Lok Sabha and 19 seats in the Rajya Sabha.

Maharashtra Government Formation

Maharashtra government was created on May 1, 1960, when the bilingual Bombay State was divided into mainly Marathi-speaking Maharashtra and Gujarati-speaking Gujarat.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena obtained a majority after a 61.4% turnout in the election. However, the alliance was disbanded due to disagreements over government formation, resulting in a political crisis. Due to this, the president’s rule was enforced in the state since no party was able to get a majority mark.

On November 23, 2019, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Shri Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as the CM of Maharashtra but resigned on November 26, 2019, due to the lack of a majority.
