A Short Note On Government Of Assam

Assam is a state located in the eastern region of India. The state has diverse flora and fauna. It is famous for its archaeological sites, silk, and Assam tea. The departments of the ministry in Assam are responsible for the smooth working of the state. The President of India appoints the head of the state, that is, the governor. Jagdish Mukhi is the present governor for the state of Assam for all the 34 districts of Assam. The state council consists of the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches.  

Assam’s Chief minister

The current CM of Assam is Sri Himanta Biswa Sarma. He is the 15th chief minister of the state, and has been associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party since 2015. He was born on February 1, 1969, in the Jorhat district of Assam and took oath as the chief minister of Assam on May 10, 2021. He was linked with the Indian National Congress party from 1991 to 2015. Under his leadership, the following matters have received importance:

  • Illegal cattle smuggling in Assam

  • Mission Bashundhara, which aims to assist residents with land and property matters

  • Conversion of 740 madrasas into normal schools. 

Sri Himanta Biswa Sarma has dedicated his life to the services of the needy. He follows the ideology of ‘Antyodaya,’ implying the development of the state by people’s participation at a grass-root level. The CM of Assam is a nationalist who is working toward the development of Assam. 

Assam Ministry 

The ministry of Assam is led by capable and powerful leaders who look after each state department. A few departments of the ministry are:

  1. Social Welfare, Finance – It is under the leadership of Ajanta Neog from the Golaghat constituency of the Golaghat district in Assam.

  2. Transport, Industries & Commerce, Skill Development, Welfare of Minorities – It is headed by Chandra Mohan Patowary from the Dharmapuri constituency of Nalbari in Assam districts.

  3. Sports & Youth Welfare, Cultural Affairs, Power, Tourism – It is governed under the leadership of Bimar Bora from the TingKhong constituency of district Dibrugarh.

  4.  Revenue & Disaster Management, hills Area Development, Mines and Minerals – It is headed by Jogen Mohan from the Mahmara constituency of district Charaideo.  

  5. Guwahati Development, urban Development, Irrigation – It is currently under the leadership of Ashok Singhal from the Dhekiajuli constituency of Sonitpur in Assam districts. 

  6. Guwahati Development, urban Development, Irrigation – It is headed by Ranuj Pegu from the Dhemaji constituency of district Dhemaji. 

  7. Panchayat and Rural Development, Public Health Engineering, Food & Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs – Ranjit Kumar Dass governs it from the Patacharkuchi constituency of district Bajali. 

  8. Handloom & Textile, Soil Conservation, Welfare of Plain Tribe & Backward Classes – It is headed by Urkhao Gwra from the Chapaguri constituency of district Kokrajhar. 

  9. Environment & Forests, Fisheries, Excise – Parimal Suklabaidya governs it from the Dholai constituency of district Cachar.

  10. Health & Family Welfare, Science and Technology, Information Technology – It is currently under the leadership of Keshab Mahanta from the Kaliabor constituency of district Nagaon.

Governor of Assam 

The present Governor of Assam is Prof. Jagadish Mukhi. He is the 30th governor of the state, and he assumed office on October 10, 2017. He was born on December 1, 1942, and completed his PhD in Finance from Kurukshetra University in 1995. He is a former member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has helped in various finance, planning, excise, and taxation positions in the Delhi Government. Prof. Mukhi played a prime role in establishing Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in Delhi. 

Speaker of Assam 

The speaker for the government of Assam is Shri Biswajit Daimary from the Bharatiya Janata Party, who assumed office on May 21, 2021. He was born on February 4, 1971, in Assam and completed his post-graduation from the Madurai Kamaraj University in Madurai. Biswajit Daimary has been a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from 2001 to 2006 and has also been a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2008 to 2014. He is also a member of the Bodoland People’s Front and was elected as its member from 2014 to 2020 in the Rajya Sabha.
