A prime number is a natural number larger than 1 that is not the product of more than two natural numbers.
A composite number is a natural number greater than 1 that is not prime.
5 is prime, for example, because the only two ways to write it as a product, 1*5 and 5*1, involve 5 itself. 4 is composite, though, because it is a product (2*2) in which both numbers are less than four.
Because of the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, every natural number bigger than 1 is either a prime or can be factored as a combination of primes that is unique up to their order, primes are crucial in number theory.
The smallest odd prime number is three. The distinctive composition of prime numbers with arithmetic powers can be used to represent any number.
If a number contains only two factors, 1 and the number itself, it is said to be prime. The number one is not regarded to be a prime number.
