Indira Gandhi was India’s first female Prime Minister to serve three consecutive terms. She succeeded as Prime Minister from Lal Bahadur Shastri. Indira Gandhi was Jawaharlal Nehru’s only child. 

  • She was the second longest-serving Indian Prime Minister and a key figure in the Indian National Congress
  • Mrs. Indira Gandhi was elected to the Congress Party’s executive committee in 1955
  • In 1959, she was elected party president, and in 1964, she was promoted to a critical position in Lal Bahadur Shastri’s governing cabinet
  • She was Prime Minister for three successive terms (1966–77) and a fourth term from 1980 till her assassination in 1984
