Answer: Carbon contains four electrons in its outermost shell. For attaining a noble gas configuration it must gain or lose four electrons which require a lot of energy. Hence, for completing the octet carbon shares four electrons with the other carbon atoms or atoms of other elements thereby forming a strong covalent bond. Carbon can form a comparatively strong covalent bond due to its small size.
