What is a Homologous Series Explain with an Example

Answer: Homologous series

  • The series of compounds that have the same functional group is referred to as homologous series.
  • They show similar general formula and chemical properties.
  • There is an increase in the molecular size and mass thus, they have different physical properties.
  • The most basic homologous series are-

Alkanes- general formula CnH2n+2

Alkenes- general formula CnH2n

  Alkynes- general formula CnH2n-2

Examples-

  • Methane (CH4)
  •  Ethane (CH3CH3)
  •  Propane (CH3CH2CH3)
  • Butane (CH3CH2CH2CH3).

We can say that there is a difference of -CH2 between each compound.
