Order and ranking
Order can be defined as the arrangement of variables in their given specified position.
Ranking is the determination or recognition of different positions. Here, based on the ranking of the person or object from position Left or Right, we have to determine the total and vice versa.
Ranking and time sequence in logical reasoning:
There are three types of concepts that we should understand:
1. Ranking sequence
2. Time sequence
1. Ranking sequence:
Suppose point A lies at the 15th number on the right side and it lies at the 10th number on the left side; the total number present can be found by adding two numbers but subtracting 1 from the total.
So, the total will be = [15+10]-1=24
So, 24 is the total number present.
Hence we derive the general formula:
Total = [ Left + Right ] -1
Example 1: In a given position of a total number of 60 students, when a boy is calculated from the left side at a position of 25, what will the position of the boy from the right side be?
Soln:
The formula is Total = [ Left + Right ] -1
Left=25, Total=60, Right=X
Hence, 60=25+X-1
60-24=X
X=36
Hence 36 is the number ranking from the right side.
Example 2: In a line of 45 students, Mehul is 10th from the Right hand and Rahul is 15th from the left end. How many students are there between Rahul and Mehul?
Soln:
Total students = 45
In this case, add the two numbers: 15+10=25.
Now the total we get from these two numbers is smaller than 45.
T – [L + R ] = 45-25=20
Hence 20 is the number of students between Rahul and Mehul.
Example 3: In a given row of 45 students, Q is 22nd from the Right side and P is 38th from the left side. Between P and Q, how many children are there?
Soln:
Here we can see a case of overlapping as the total = 38+22=60
Hence, 60>45
So the formula is [ P+Q ] – T – 2
Now substituting it, we get 60-45-2= 13.
So, 13 is the number of children between P andQ.
Example 4: In a line, P is 15th from the right corner and Q is 25th from the right corner. Find how many people are sitting between P and Q?
Soln: Take the difference between the two numbers, we will get ‘n’
n= 25 – 15 = 10
Now subtract 1 from the ‘n’, we get the number of persons sitting = n – 1 = 10-1 = 9
Hence, 9 persons are sitting between P and Q.
2. Time sequence:
Let’s tackle some basic time-related questions. We know time can be described in two formats: 12 hours and 24 hours.
12 hours:
We use AM – After Meridian – from midnight to noon
PM – Prime Meridian – from noon to midnight
24 hours:
In this, only hours are mentioned:
Eg: 9:00 AM – 9:00 hours
Example 5: How do you write 9:00 PM in the 24 hour format?
Soln: We know that 9:00PM is 12 hours after 9:00AM
Hence, add 12 hours to 9:00AM
We get 9:00AM + 12:00 = 21:00 hours
Hence 9:00 PM is 21:00 hours in the 24-hour format.
Example 6: After every 20 minutes from a bus stand a bus leaves for Jaisalmer. The bus had left already 10 minutes ago and the next bus will leave at 9:35 AM. At what time reached at the bus stop?
Soln: We know that the next bus will arrive at 9:35 AM
Subtract 30 min from the time 9:35AM = 9:35-0:20 = 9:15
Hence, the bus departed at 9:15 AM and the information was passed 10 mins after that so,
9:15+10 = 9:25AM
Hence, the information was given to the passenger at 9:25 AM.
Example 7: If the seventh day of a month is three days earlier than Friday, then what will the 19th day of the month be?
Soln: We can map the given data as:
Three days earlier than Friday is Tuesday so the 7th day is Tuesday
As the weekdays repeat after 7 days
The dates on Tuesday will be 7, 14, 21
So 19 20 21
Sunday Monday Tuesday
Hence, Sunday is on the 19th day of the month.
Example 8: Ashish leaves his house at 20 minutes to seven in the morning, reaches Kunal’s house in 25 minutes and after 15 minutes they leave for the office, which takes them another 35 minutes. At what time do they leave Kunal’s house to go to the office?
Soln: Ashish leaves home at 7:20AM and reaches Kunal’s house in 25 minutes. Add 7:20 + 0:25 = 7:45AM
Now they take another 15 minutes for breakfast, so 7:45+0:15 = 8:00 AM
Hence, they leave Kunal’s house for the office at 8:00 AM.
Relationship between number ranking time sequence test and verbal reasoning
Number ranking and time system focus on daily life basic arithmetics whereas verbal reasoning focuses on the vocabulary of the language.
Number ranking and time sequence are related to analytical reasoning whereas verbal reasoning is related to comprehension reasoning.
Both are a part of logical reasoning.
Conclusion
In number ranking, the ranking can be defined from the position on the left and right sides.The general formula and basic for the ranking position is given as Total = [ Left + Right ] -1 However when overlapping happens then use [ Left side rank+Right side rank ] – T, where (Left side rank+Right side rank )> T. In clocks, time can be described in a 12 hours scheme or in a 24 hours scheme.
