Junior Research Fellowship is abbreviated as JRF.
The Junior Research Fellowship scheme has been implemented with an objective, such as providing professional opportunities to the NET qualified applicants as well as to guide them on their further research studies practically in various subjects. They could achieve an “MPhil/Ph.D.” degree in their allocated subjects, such as humanities, science, or language subjects. It provides the applicants practical training as well as enhances their knowledge in a broader aspect and examines their acknowledged learnings.
Eligibility of JRF
University Grants Commission launched a scheme for providing opportunities to talented and educated learners through NET and CSIR eligibility tests. The scheme is known as Junior Research Fellowship, the candidates who have been cleared of these joint exams are eligible for further aptitude tests based on the criteria of the allocated universities or colleges. For applying for the NET and CSIR eligibility test, the candidate must have completed a Master’s Degree on their specific subject and need to score a minimum of 55% in master’s. There is an age limitation followed in the tenure such as, for applying for a junior research fellowship, the candidate must be under 28 years, though age relaxation for SC/ST or physically disabled persons including female candidatures.
Nature of JRF Scheme
According to the UGC norms, the junior research fellowship tenure was for 2 years, the applied candidates remained under the expert’s observation and assessment process for this period. The activity and research that has been done by JRF were analysed thoroughly. Hence, it provided declarations regarding their progress. When the study or the research is complemented and evaluated as up to the mark by the experts, the junior research fellowship is promoted as senior research fellowship for the next 3 years tenure plan. On the other hand, those JRF who were unable to provide adequate research papers within the first two years of the scheme plan would get an extra one year to complete their research. The scheme allocated for the whole work only for five years, and it is expected to improve their research concepts eventually.
According to the program schemes, the candidates who are working as a junior research fellowship are monitored by the correspondent expertise who will guide them. After analysing the paper of JRF, they represented their activities to the UGC officials in order to promote them as SRF. The experts who are included in these monitoring processes are, “the supervisor, Head of the Department and External investigators”. The performance of the junior research fellowship has been assessed by the committee to approve their promotion. In addition, it is quite obvious the Junior research fellowship needs to be ethically mannered; the provisional regulations could cancel their fellowship.
Patterns of Examination for JRF
NET and CSIR exams have occurred two times in a year with a competitive question pattern. It includes different segments in examinations, such as MCQs which are based on “general science and aptitude reasoning in the first part. Later, in the second segment, the questions are based on the applicant’s specialized subject, and the third part of the examination includes the candidates’ personal skills on the concepts. There is a negative marking allocation for wrong questions.
According to the regulations of UGC, the candidates who are rewarded for junior research fellowship roles would receive a stipend amount per month, in addition, from the respected college where the applicants played as JRF, would get an “annual contingency amount”. There is a great opportunity for the JRF after completion of their fellowship has been provided. The thesis papers which have been written by them are published mentioning their names on the paper. It would be greatly beneficial for the fellow who was successfully awarded as JRF while applying for Ph.D., as they do not need to sit for any entrance exam for the degree. In addition, they would be appointed directly in the colleges or institutions as a guest lecturer permanently after completion of JRF tenure.
A junior research fellowship scheme is beneficial to the efficient candidates for a secure future, as it helps the pupil to learn advanced techniques professionally. They would receive expert guidance to upgrade their skills and knowledge which would reward them to become a senior research fellowship. In addition, it provides a broad opportunity for the candidates to get scholarships in between their learning which helps them in further studies.
