Nervous Tissue

Nervous tissue is one of the four types of tissue in the body. It's responsible for sending and receiving messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Know more.

Nervous tissue is one of the four types of tissue in the body. It’s responsible for sending and receiving messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Nervous tissue is made up of two main parts: neurons and neuroglia. In this article, we’ll discuss what each of these components does and how they work together to keep us healthy!

What Is A Nervous Tissue?

Nervous tissue is one of the four types of tissues that make up our bodies. The other three types are epithelial, connective, and muscle tissue. Nervous tissue is found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. It’s made up of two main types of cells: neurons and neuroglia.

Neurons are the cells that send and receive messages from the brain. They’re also responsible for processing information from our senses. Neuroglia is supporting cells that help to keep the neurons healthy.

What are Neurons?

Neurons are cells that send and receive messages from the brain. They’re made up of a cell body, dendrites, and an axon. The cell body is the part of the neuron that contains the nucleus. The dendrites are branches that extend from the cell body. They receive information from other neurons. The axon is a long, thin extension that sends information from the cell body to other cells.

What is Neuroglia?

Neuroglia is supporting cells that help to keep the neurons healthy. There are four main types of neuroglia: astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia, and Schwann cells. Astrocytes are the most common type of neuroglia. They help to keep the neurons healthy and provide support for the blood-brain barrier. Oligodendrocytes help to insulate axons and provide support for myelin sheaths. Microglia are responsible for clearing debris from the brain. Schwann cells help to repair damaged nerves.

What Does Nervous Tissue Do?

Nervous tissue is responsible for sending and receiving messages between the brain and the rest of the body. This process is called nerve impulses. Nerve impulses are electrical signals that travel from the brain to the body and back again.

There are two parts to the human nervous system: peripheral and central. The brain and spinal cord are part of the central nervous system. All of the nerves that branch off from the brain and spinal cord are part of the peripheral nervous system.

The nervous system is responsible for everything from our basic reflexes to our thoughts and emotions. It’s what allows us to feel pain, see, hear, smell, taste, touch, and move. Without the nervous system, we would be unable to function!

Conclusion

Nervous tissue is found in the brain and spinal cord. It helps to relay messages between the brain and other parts of the body. The cells that make up nervous tissue are called neurons. Neurons have long, thin extensions called dendrites and a single extension called an axon. Dendrites receive messages from other neurons, while the axon sends messages away from the neuron. When a message is sent, it travels down the axon as an electrical impulse. This impulse causes chemicals called neurotransmitters to be released at junctions between neurons known as synapses. Neurotransmitters cross the synapse and attach to receptors on the dendrite of the next neuron, passing on the message.
