Human Health and Diseases-Communicable Disease-Bacterial Disease

Introduction:

Helminths are one of the parts of the chapter on humans and diseases. This tells you about infectious diseases and the process of their expansion. Helminths come with different categories, which some simple measures can prevent.

Before starting this chapter, let me tell you one thing. Human and Disease are considered one of the important chapters in biology. You can score very high with the help of this chapter. It would help if you focused on some of the parts of it. In this article, I am going to accentuate all those. By the end of this article, you will be competent enough to solve any of the questions from this chapter.

What are helminths Infections?

Some diseases are transmitted from the soil. Such infections are called helminths infections. Those places where poverty is prevalent are volatile for such infections. With the lack of sanitation, such infections can be transmitted easily. There are some basic symptoms of helminths, such as Vomiting, Abdominal pain. Apart from that, one can experience Weight loss. Reluctance on food is another symptom of helminths.

Classification Of Helminths:

There are different types of Helminths. They work differently. Those are-

  • Roundworm ( Ascaris lumbricoides)
  • Whipworms ( Trichuris trichiura)
  • Hookworm ( Necator Americanus and ancylostoma Duodenale)

They are the most effective Helminths. There are certain geographical areas where the infections are most. Through the chart, you can learn those quickly. The chart shows the species and the locations.

Species

Locations

Ascariasis

Sub Saharan, Africa, India, China, East Asia

Trichuriasis

India, China, East Asia, Sub Saharan

Hookworm

Africa, America, China, Sub Sahara

Schistosomiasis

Sub Saharan, East Asia, China, Africa, America

Characteristics of Helminths:

Ascariasis:

  • The fresh specimens are in the colour of light yellow or pink.
  • The length of a female roundworm is 20-40 cm, whereas the male counterpart is smaller than the female.
  • The body of a roundworm is made of three layers- Cuticle, middle epidermis, and inner longitudinal muscles.

Trichuriasis:

  • They have an elongated anterior end.
  • Whipworms have a blunter posterior end, and it contains the anus and sex organs.
  • Female whipworms’ length is 30-50 cm, whereas males are shorter than females.

Hookworm:

  • Hookworms are generally in clear colour and oval in shape.
  • There is a lot of space in the inner and outer shells.
  • Their outer shell appears thin and black.

Transmission of Helminths:

Helminths are transmitted through soil. Worms generally live in the intestine, and they also complete their reproduction process here. An adult worm can produce thousands of eggs in a day. By the process, they are blended with soil. From here, they are transmitted to another carrier.

Ways of the transmission of Helminths:

  • Suppose the vegetables and fruits are not washed properly. Sometimes the vegetables are not cooked well; the eggs can be transmitted easily.
  • Eggs can be transmitted through water.
  • Sometimes people are in contact with soil and transmit the eggs easily.

Symptoms of Helminths:

This transmitted Disease has several symptoms. With those, anyone can easily identify helminths. Those symptoms are-

  • Abdominal pain.
  • Weight Loss.
  • Loss of Appetite.
  • Cough
  • Visible in stools.

Prevention of Helminths :

Helminths can cause some serious issues, and they should be prevented. Especially those areas where the transmission takes place easily. Some prevention methods can easily be maintained.

  • Before eating raw vegetables or fruits, washing is compulsory.
  • Meat can be a good transmission source, so well-cooked food must be eaten.
  • Utensils should be well washed before cooking.
  • One must avoid walking barefoot on the soil.
  • Keeping hygiene is the key to preventing Helminths.

How to cure?

It is highly recommended that doctors cure this problem, apart from that Albendazole, a medicine WHO recommends. In serious cases, professional help is a must.

Methods of diagnosis the helminths:

There are various processes through which Helminths can be identified. Let us know about the process in detail here. Those processes are-

Stool Test:

Stool Test is the most common diagnosis process of helminths. Any worms can lay eggs in the intestine. Their larvae travel through the digestive system. An only stool test can identify the adult worm or their larvae.

Blood Test:

Blood tests are another process of identifying the parasite. Through a Blood test, Intestinal worms can be diagnosed.

Tape Test:

It is the process that is checked by tape. Such as, in this process, the worms are identified. As, Through a Tape test, the worms are identified from the anal opening.

Colonoscopy:

This test is suitable to check helminths. As, In this process, a camera is entered from the anal opening to detect any Helminths.

Conclusion:

Helminths are the causes of major concerns. This infection can take place in various ways. When someone comes in contact with this parasite, it becomes contaminated. Certain places come under major exposure.

Some places that do not have adequate sanitization are infected very easily. Like the symptoms, abdominal pain and vomiting can cause serious problems. Not only that, but a loss of weight is also a concerning symptom. Some tests are recommended here, such as Stool test, blood test, colonoscopy, etc.

Through this article, you will have a profound idea of helminths. How they are transmitted, and their prevention are thoroughly discussed here.
