World Food Programme

The largest humanitarian organization in the whole world is the UN World Food Programme. This organization saves lives by providing food, recovering them from disasters amongst all.

The World Food Programme works under the United Nations as an assistant branch. This organization mainly focused on food security and hunger. The headquarters of this organization is in Rome. The organization was established in 1961 and has offices in approximately 80 countries all over the world. Approx 690 million people all over the world are suffering from an empty stomach. One meal at least one right time can be enough for them to change their life and WFP tried their best to provide food to the needy. 

David Beasley is the head of the World Food Programme. The total staff of the organization is approximately 19,660 and among all of them, 11500 people work in remote areas. In 2020, the World Food Programme assisted almost 115.5 million people in 84 countries and since 2012, this is the largest number. In 2020, this organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.  

The main mission of the organization is to end hunger and improve nutrition by 2030. Hunger is still one of the biggest problems in the whole world. According to the World Food Programme, there is a possibility to end hunger. At any given time, the World Food Programme has 30 ships, 100 planes, and approximately 5600 trucks traveling to save the neediest people at that time. WFP always gives focus on emergency situations such as relief and rehabilitation, hunger relief, emergency in disaster amongst all. 

Saving lives:

Disaster is one of the main causes of hunger and malnutrition in the world. Due to the disasters, there are huge damages such as destruction of homes, loss of lives, damages to the infrastructure and productive assets, decreased availability of water and food. In such cases, the WFP is working to diminish and prevent hunger due to the disaster. The organization arranges some of the programs to guide people to take proper actions at the time of disasters. Along with that they always prepared themselves to mitigate the consequences on food security. In partnership with different NGOs, Government, research institutions; the WFP is working on the global and national level to analyze the livelihood systems to ensure the nutrition dynamics factors on climate risk. 

Emergency relief: 

In the most urgent situation or emergencies, the human suffers a lot and this is an abnormal event that produces disturbance in the life of a community. In such conflict or disaster situations, the World Food Programme has provided food for more than 50 years. The WFP has developed a proper body with all the expertise in remit emergencies. The organization is assisting millions of people all over the world within approx 84 countries. At the end of 2020, approx 270 million people were suffering from food insecurity and the WFP has worked till the end to secure that community. To date, the World Food Programme continues saving millions of people who are displaced from basic essential resources due to disasters by giving support to food security and nutrition.   

Food assistance: 

In late 2000, the World Food Programme changed its concept from Food aid to Food Assistance. This Food Assistance is something that fulfills people’s long-term nutritional needs. For the durable situation, the World Food Programme is the world’s leading humanitarian agency combined with frontline action and quest. At present approx 38.4 million people are assisted through cash transfers. In 2020, the World Food Programme organization will transfer approx US $2.1 billion in cash to 67 countries. A 37% portfolio of WFP’s food assistance is now provided in cash. This cash transfer helps people to fulfill their essential needs along with boosting the market demand. This cash transfer includes physical banknotes, mobile money, debit cards, e-money amongst all. 

Supply chain:

At any given time, the World Food Programme organization and the partners have dedicated thousands of staff channels to fight against hunger. They use all means such as trucks, ships, planes, amphibious vehicles, and helicopters to reach the essential resources to the needy. With 60 years of experience in delivering food assistance, securing many people’s lives, and day by day the WFP is a way to achieve the sustainable development goal. In 2020 almost ¼ of the World Food Programme produced food locally and 3.6 million of food was delivered by WFP 2020. Along with these, US$2.6 billion worth of goods, services, and foods were purchased in 2020 to reduce the intergenerational cycle of hunger.

Compared with the ’90s, now the number of hunger is 300 million which is fewer than in the 90s. They are regularly conducting events to tackle the cause of hunger.
