The aim of this assignment is to shed light on the concept of the “United Nations World Tourism Organisation” (UNWTO). This paper will focus on the broad concept of UNWTO along with its relation with India and the main objective of the tourism organisation.

The “World Tourism Organisation” (WTO) is entrusted under the mane of UNWTO, which is considered a specialised agency that deals with the promotion of an accessible, sustainable, and responsible tourism industry. The headquarters of the tourism organisation is located in Madrid, Spain. This tourism organisation is one of the leading organisations that contribute to the promotion of the tourism industry and trigger the drivers that would aid in the growth of the economy. This WTO takes upon charges in order to promote sustainable, responsible and easy accessibility of the various services of the tourism industry. Moreover, the UNWTO is also responsible for the growth of the economy in terms of environmental sustainability inclusive development, offers leadership, and supports gaining knowledge about tourism policies and tourism advances. 

Overview of United Nations World Tourism Organisation

The UNWTO is a part of a specialised agency entrusted by the name of WTO. UNWTO has been developed in order to promote and encourage the offering of various services to the customers in terms of achieving success in the tourism industry. This tourism organisation takes upon the charges of sustainable development of tourism services, easy accessibility of the wide variety of tourism services and responsibility of the tour-interested customers. Moreover, this organisation has also been seen to be encouraging the “Global Code of Ethics for Tourism”. The official languages associated with the running of UNWTO are English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and Arabic.      

Role of United Nations World Tourism Organisation

  • Through proper innovations and digital transformation, the tourism sector can be developed in a smarter way. 

  • Through investment and entrepreneurship, the UNWTO can achieve competitive advantages.

The main purpose of the UNWTO is to focus and deal with the promotion of tourism services in terms of responsibility, sustainability, and feasible accessibility. This tourism organisation also contributes to supporting knowledge and offering leadership in accordance with the development of various tourism policies.    

Participation of India in United Nations World Tourism Organisation 

India has been considered a member of the UNWTO along with its Executive Council on a continuous basis for the last 19 years. India has been recognised as the Chairmanship in terms of Executive Council two times. Moreover, India has been elected as the head of the UNWTO.    

Statistical Analysis of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation

“Tourism statistics” can be referred to as the accumulation of data in accordance with every broad aspect of the tourism sector, along with analysing the collected data sets, followed by the interpretation of the collected data. According to the UNWTO, the travel and tourism sector faced a huge drawback due to the advent of Covid-19 and the resulting pandemic situations. These sectors were the most affected ones, which are still in the recovery state since the advent of pandemic conditions. It has also been observed that before the period of the pandemic, “1 out of 10 jobs” heavily relied on the tourism industry along with the profit of international tourists reaching 1.5 billion in 2019.

Some of the noted priorities of the UNWTO include:

  • Promotion of sustainable development of the tourism sector

  • Building networks and partnerships

  • Improvement competitiveness in terms of tourism

It can be concluded that the UNWTO is considered one of the leading organisations that contribute to the promotion of responsible, easily accessible, and sustainable tourism services for the customers. This tourism organisation also helps in offering knowledge and leadership in terms of tourism policies and advances. Various statistical data has revealed that although a bigger part of the tourism sector has experienced huge loss due to Covid-19, there has been significant recovery after the stoppage of lockdown periods. Moreover, India has been referred to as the head of the UNWTO due to its dedicated commitment.
