Vernier callipers-its uses for measurement

The vernier caliper is a measuring device used to measure objects accurately. In this article, you will learn more about its uses and functions.

Introduction

The vernier caliper is a measuring device used to calculate the internal and external diameters of the given object along with the height and depth of the specimen in a linear dimension manner. Pierre Vernier, a French mathematician, innovated vernier calipers to calculate the accurate measurement of the object linearly. The word caliper is defined as the instrument having two jaws to precisely calculate the given objects’ diameters.

The working principle behind the vernier caliper is that two scales of different sizes are taken into consideration, and the difference helps calculate the object’s accuracy. The advantage of the vernier caliper is that it can calculate the objects having a diameter up to 1mm.

Parts of Vernier Caliper

Vernier Caliper consists of 8 parts, and each of them is mentioned below.

  1. Inside Jaws: It helps measure the internal dimension of the given objects.
  2. Outside jaws: It helps calculate the external dimension of the given objects.
  3. The Main Scale measures in millimeters (mm) or inches.
  4. Vernier scale measures in millimeters (mm) or inches.
  5. Measuring depth Probe: It helps calculate the depth of the given objects.
  6. Retainer: The utilization of retainer is to block the moving part of the caliper.

Preparation for using a vernier caliper

To measure the height, depth, or diameter of the given object, the object needs to be put in between the outer and inner jaws of the vernier caliper. Out of the two, one is a fixed jaw, and the other one is a moving jaw. The specimen should be placed precisely with the help of a locking pin.

The formula used to calculate the dimension of the object in vernier caliper

The formula for vernier caliper is mentioned below:

Measurement= M.S.R + (V.S.R*L.C)

How to calculate the least count of the vernier caliper?

The least count is measured in the following ways:

Least Count (L.C) = 1 MSD – 1VSD

How to take the reading in the vernier caliper in mm?

To get the reading in vernier caliper, you must have the following readings: main scale divisions, least count, and vernier scale divisions. The above-mentioned reading of the object needs to be calculated in the following ways.

How to measure the Main Scale Division?

The vernier scale in its zero division coincides with some number (suppose 10) on the main scale, then the Main Scale Reading (MSR) of the vernier scale will be 10mm.

How to measure the Vernier Scale Divisions?

Whatever division of the vernier scale coincides with the main scale gives the vernier scale reading.

How to measure the least count?

To calculate the least count the following formula is used.

Least Count (L.C) = 1 MSD- 1VSD

Let’s understand this with an example

If, 1 VSD= (49/50) MSD= 0.98 MSD

Then least count = 1VSD- 1MSD

= 1 MSD – 0.98 MSD= 0.02 mm

Here, the least count of the caliper = 0.02mm

The formula to calculate the dimension of the specimen = M.S.R+(V.S.R*L.C)

= 10+ (5*0.02) = 10+0.1 = 10.1mm

The dimension of the object is 10.1mm

Notes to keep in mind while using Vernier caliper:

  1. To accurately measure the specimen, the jaws are closed nicely before starting the reading from zero.
  2. The specimen should be cleaned properly before the measurement starts. Small dirt can change the exact value of the given object if not cleaned appropriately.
  3. The vernier caliper has a screw to keep the device stable. Rotating the screws clockwise will loosen the device, while rotating the screws anticlockwise will tighten it.

Using the vernier caliper

The uses of the vernier caliper are mentioned below:

  • As mentioned earlier, the Vernier caliper consists of two jaws. The big one is stuck close to the object very tightly, whereas the smaller one is put during the opening of the device. The first one helps in calculating the distance between both the ends, and the second jaws are used to calculate the internal diameter of the specimen. Both the jaws are managed by sliding the small scale.
  • To get the reading in the scale, the vernier scale at zero coincides with the main scale, and students should note that reading precisely. If two values are visible, take the lesser one from the scale and note it down.
  • To get the final result of the scale, you need to add the vernier scale and main scale reading keeping in mind the units used to represent the values.

Vernier caliper functioning

The vernier calipers functioning in different sectors are mentioned below.

  • Education Purpose

The students in their high school use the vernier scale to find out the dimension of the objects. In engineering colleges, students have to calculate the specimen’s height, depth, and diameter by correcting the zero error. Vernier scale gives a practical understanding of the lessons that we read theoretically.

  • Research and labs

Scientists also use Vernier calipers for research and lab work. They are used to calculate the expansion of the metals when there is a rise and drop in temperature. Such a process helps in knowing the characteristics and features of the metal. The best of the caliper is that it can calculate the gravity effect of the specimen when rotated in various dimensions.

  • Medical Sector

Medicals use different tools to measure the diagnosis and surgeries of the patients. To resolve such issues, vernier calipers are used to generate different tools for the medical perspective.

  • Machinery

For the building of the aircraft and ships, small parts are used. Vernier calipers come into play for giving accurate measures for the building of small parts easily. It helps provide an exact measurement of the specimen in calculating the depth, dimension, and thickness of the object.

  • Aerospace sector

In the Aerospace sector, even a small change in the specimen will make the entire process fail or useless. To save in such a situation, vernier calipers come into the role of measuring the exact dimensions of the given object for safe use and going for error-free calculation.
