Regelation is the process by which ice melts to the water below 0°C when pressure is applied and then refreezes back to ice when the pressure is released. It is a common event in the ice industry. The massive mass of glacier ice can exert enough pressure on its lower surface (the glacier base) to lower the melting point of its ice, allowing it to become more liquid. The primary function of the water film is to move water from high-pressure areas of the glacier bed to areas of regelation and back again (often described as low-pressure areas).

Regelation can be found in glaciers. As a glacier grows in size, it exerts enough pressure on the ice at its base to lower the freezing point of the ice, melting it and allowing the glacier to glide over the liquid underneath. When the correct conditions are met, liquid water can flow from the glacier’s base. The water behind the glacier begins to refreeze.

The presentation of ice on a wire is yet another example of regelation in action. Place an ice cube in the middle of a fine wire and attach a heavyweight to the wire. The pressure that the wire applies to the ice causes it to melt, allowing the wire to travel through it without breaking. You can draw the wire through the ice cube while leaving the ice cube intact because the water refreezes behind the wire’s path as it passes through it. While regelation is taking place, a portion of the melting is caused by the heating of the wire under stress.

Ice skating works because the pressure exerted by the skater presses down on the skate blade, causing some of the ice to melt and become liquid water. The skate then glides across the water surface. The pressure required to melt the ice is insufficient when the temperature is too low; as a result, skating is not possible. Besides the process of regelation, there are a number of other elements that influence ice skating.
