Square prism

In this article, we will learn about the prism, its shape, square prism, its properties, types of square prism, its formula and square prism net.

Table of Content
  •

A prism is a three-dimensional solid made up of two congruent, parallel bases that are linked by flat sides. The shape of a prism’s parallel bases gives it its name, hence a square prism has two congruent, parallel, square bases. A rectangular prism, on the other hand, has two rectangular bases that are congruent and parallel. Although all cubes are square prisms, not all square prisms are cubes.

Prism shape

A prism is a solid object with two similar ends (such as a triangle, square, rectangle, or other shape), flat faces or surfaces, and a uniform cross-section throughout its length. Because the cross-section resembles a triangle, the prism is known as a triangular prism. The prism’s shape is devoid of curves. As a result, a prism can be square, rectangular, pentagonal, or any other polygon shape except circular.

Types of prism

The cross-sections of the prisms are used to name them. There are two types of it:

  1. Regular prism

  2. Irregular prism

Regular prism

It’s called a regular prism when the prism’s bases are in the shape of a regular polygon.

Irregular prism

The prism is called an irregular prism if the bases are in the shape of an irregular polygon.

Square prism

A square prism is a cuboid form with square bases and rectangle faces. The opposing sides and angles are similar. A magnet bar is a perfect example of a square prism shape.

The prism is called a square prism because its bases are square and its lateral sides are rectangular in the illustration.

Properties of square prism

Between two square faces, a square prism has four rectangle faces. The square prism has a number of important features, including:

  1. Six faces, twelve edges, and eight vertices make up a square prism.

  2. The opposite sides of square prisms are parallel to each other.

  3. The opposite sides of square prisms are congruent to each other.

  4. The opposite angles of square prisms are congruent to each other.

  5. The diagonals of square prisms bisect each other.

Types of square prism

There are two types of square prisms. They are as follows:

  1. Right square prism

  2. Oblique square prism

Right Square Prism

A prism with square bases is known as a square prism. The lateral faces of a square prism are perpendicular to the base in a right square prism.

  1. A square prism’s vertices are equal to eight;

  2. It’s edges are equal to twelve;

  3. And its faces are equal to six (including bases)

Oblique Square Prism

An oblique prism is one in which the lateral faces (rectangular faces) of a square prism are not perpendicular to the square bases.

Square prism formulas

Due to the fact that a square prism is a solid shape, it contains two major formulas:

  1. Surface area of a square prism

  2. Volume of a square prism

Surface area of a square prism

The overall area of a three-dimensional solid object’s surface is measured by the surface area of a square prism. It’s calculated in square units. The sum of twice the base area and the lateral surface area of a prism is the surface area of the prism.

The formula for calculating the surface area of a square prism is:

Surface area of a square prism, SA = 2a² + 4ah sq. units.

Where, a = side of the square prism

h = height of the square prism

Volume of a square prism

A square prism’s volume is a measurement of the solid’s occupied units. The number of units used to fill a cube equals the volume of a square prism. Cubic units are used to represent it. The formula for the volume of a square prism is as follows:

Volume of square prism = Area of base ⨯ Height of prism

If the side of the base is “a” and the prism’s height is “h,” then:

Volume of square prism, V = a²h cubic units

Square prism net

We can acquire the net of the square prism by opening and flattening it. The square prism’s net will provide a clear image of two square faces and four rectangle faces.

Conclusion

There are many different types of prisms that may be made since there are many distinct shapes that can serve as the foundation of a prism. Prisms are named after the shape of their bases, hence a square prism was named after the squares in its base.

Ans. A three-dimensional structure with two square bases and flat sides is known as a square prism. As a result, all square prisms have at least two squares; even if not all of the sides are square, a square prism exists as long as the bases are square.
