JEE Main 2026 Preparation: Question Papers, Solutions, Mock Tests & Strategy Unacademy » JEE Study Material » Mathematics » Interval Notation

Interval Notation

Interval notation is a technique to symbolize an interval on quite a number line. In different words, it's a manner of writing subsets of the actual variety line. An Interval accommodates the numbers' mendacity among precise given numbers. For example, the set of numbers x fulfilling 0 ≤ x ≤ 5 is an Interval that consists of 0, 5, and all numbers between 0 and 5.

Table of Content
  •

Interval notation is a manner of expressing a subset of actual numbers through the numbers that ensure them. We can use this notation to symbolize inequalities. We realize an interval expressed as 1 < x < 5 denotes a hard and fast numbers mendacity among 1 and 5. Examples of Interval Notation Suppose we need to specify the set of Actual numbers {x |-2 < x < 5} the usage of an interval notation. This may be expressed as interval notation (-2, 5). The set of actual numbers may be expressed as (-∞, ∞).

 Different Types Of Intervals:-

Intervals may be labeled primarily based totally on the numbers the set comprises. Some units consist of the endpoints exactly within the side of the notation, even as a few may in part or now no longer consist of the endpoints. In general, there are 3 kinds of durations given,

 • Open Interval

 • Closed Interval

• Half-Open Interval

Open Interval –

This form of interval does now no longer consist of the endpoints of the inequality. For example, the set  -{3 < x < 1} does now no longer consist of the endpoints, –3 and 1. This is expressed by the usage of open Interval notation: (-3, 1).

Closed Interval-

This form of Interval consists of the endpoints of the inequality. For example, the set -{3 ≤ x ≤ 1} consists of the endpoints, –3 and 1. This is expressed through the use of closed Interval notation: [-3,1].

Half-Open Interval-

This sort of Interval period consists of the handiest one of the endpoints of the inequality. For example, the set -3 ≤ x < 1 consists of the endpoint -3. This is expressed through the use of half-open interval period notation: [-3,1).

Notations For Different Types of Intervals-

We can study positive rules and logos to represent the interval notation for precise sorts of durations. Let us understand precise symbols that can be used to install writing a specific form of interval notation. The symbol for interval notation. The notations we use for precise durations are:

  • [ ]: This is a square bracket that is used while every endpoint is covered within the side of the set.

  • ( ): This is a round bracket that is used while every endpoint is excluded within the side of the set.

  • ( ]: This is a semi-open bracket that is used while the left endpoint is excluded and the right endpoint is covered withinside the set.

  • [ ): This is also a semi-open bracket that is used while the left endpoint is covered and the right endpoint is excluded withinside the set.

Number Line Representation of Different Types Of Intervals-

Different sorts of interval notation can be represented on quite a number line. Look at the available table that distinguishes amongst all the sorts of durations the usage of their instance on quite a number line.

Converting inequality to interval notation follow the stairs cited under to transform an inequality into Interval notation:-

  • Graph the answer set of the interval on a variety of lines.

  •  Write the numbers withinside the Interval notation with a smaller range acting first at the range line at the left.

  • If the set is unbounded on the left, use the symbol “-∞” and if it’s miles unbounded on the right, use the symbol “∞”.

Important Notes on Interval Notation-

  • Interval notation is used to explicitly define the set of inequalities.

  • There are three sorts of interval notation: open interval, closed interval, and half-open Interval.

  •  The interval without an infinity image is known as bounded interval notations.

  •  The interval containing the infinity image is known as unbounded interval notations.

Conclusion-

In this article, we have seen the definition of interval and how it is denoted. We have also seen different types of interval and their representation. We have also gone through the number line representation of different types of intervals. The important facts to remember have also been discussed.

Ans. We can convert inequality to interval notation with the ...Read full

Ans: Interval notation is a way to symbolize any subset of the actual wide variety line. We use distinctive symbols primarily based totally on the sort of interval to put in writing its notation. For example, the set of numbers x pleasing 1 ≤ x ≤ 6 is an interval that carries 1, 6, and all numbers among 1 and 6.

Ans:  When we constitute the answer set of an interval on a number of lines, that may be a graph for the interval notation.

Ans: We can graph the interval notation for a given set of numbers primarily based totally on the sort of wide variety and precise symbols for the brackets used to surround the set for the given unique type.

Ans: The union “∪” image is used to indicate the union of or greater durations in any interval notation. Interval notation is described because the approach is used to symbolize any subset of the actual wide variety line.

Ans: There are distinctive varieties of durations that may be represented by following a distinctive set of policies for interval notation. These varieties of interval  notation may be given as,

  • Open Interval
  • Closed Interval
  • Half-Open Interval

Ans. We can convert inequality to interval notation with the usage of the below-given steps,

  • Firstly, we want to graph the answer set of the interval on a number of lines.
  • Then write the numbers withinside the interval notation with a smaller wide variety acting first at the wide variety line at the left.

Use the symbol “-∞” for the unbounded set on the left and if it’s miles unbounded on right, use the symbol “∞”.
