JEE Main 2026 Preparation: Question Papers, Solutions, Mock Tests & Strategy Unacademy » JEE Study Material » Mathematics » Greater than Symbol

Greater than Symbol

Greater than symbol is a mathematical term used to compare two quantities and help to establish a relationship between two where one term is greater than the other term.

Table of Content
  •

The sign used to represent the greater than inequality is “ > “. The use of the greater than symbol is to compare two values in which the first number is greater than the second number or one value is greater than the other one.

Also, to compare two weights, distances, volumes, etc. greater than sign is used.

For example, 8>5 means 8 is greater than 5.

When we compare the values of numbers, we use some mathematical signs instead of words.

The sign used to represent the greater than inequality is “ > “.

There are more symbols other than greater than signs.

Below is the table which shows the symbol of greater than, smaller than, equal with the symbolic representation to understand them better.

Sign

Description

Example

>

Greater  than sign

9>4

<

lesser than sign

8<9

≥

Greater than or equal to sign

students≥50

≤

Lesser than or equal to sign

students≤50

≠

Not equal to sign

2-1≠7

=

Equal to sign

4-2=2

Less than a symbol-

The sign used to represent less than inequality is “ > “. The use of the lesser than symbol is to compare two values in which the first number is lesser than the second number or one value is lesser than the other one.

Also, to compare two weights, distances, volumes, etc. less than sign is used.

For example, 5<8 means 5 is lesser than 8.

When we compare the values of numbers, we use some mathematical signs instead of words.

The sign used to represent less than inequality is “ < “.

Equal to symbol-

The sign used to represent the equal is “ = “. The use of the equal symbol is to tell that the two objects or numerals are equal.

It basically says that one object is equal to the other.

For example       42=2 , so LHS is equal to RHS.

How to use the Greater than Sign?

The best way to remember the greater than symbol is the crocodile strategy. When you compare two values, think about the crocodile strategy. We know that the crocodile’s mouth is constantly pointing towards the biggest value as it can eat as much as its mouth can fill. To represent the greater value by using greater signs, the crocodile’s mouth always opens to one side, the left side.

Greater than Symbol Equation

This sign is called greater than sign in mathematics.

For example, The statement “4 is greater than 2” is true. So we can write it as 4 > 2.

We can write the Greater Than sign in many other ways.

Like: more than, greater than, larger than, and bigger than, etc.

Corresponding to the sign “>”.

And the words minimum, at least, and greater than or equal to, etc.

Corresponding to the sign “≥”.

Greater than Symbol meaning in Test

Now we will know how to compare the symbol in-class test marks.

Here is data with the help of which we will know how the symbol is used.

Applications of Greater Than Less Than Symbols in Algebra

As we know, mathematical problems do not always end with equality. Sometimes, it should have inequalities such as greater than or less than sign. The statement can be expressed using mathematical expressions.

For example, “x” is the number of students in a class. If there are more than 50 students in a class, and again 5 more students joined in your class, then there are more than 60 students in a class. This statement is mathematically expressed as x+5 >50

Conclusion

This is how we can easily understand the process of using the ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ sign in mathematics. There is even equal to symbol which helps in carrying out the mathematical operations. We should memorize maths symbols well because they make our work very easy.

Nirmal got 40 marks in her Maths exam whereas her friend Ritu got 50 marks in the same exam. Who scored greater marks?

Ans: Marks obtained by Nirmat = 40 Marks obtained by Ritu = 50...Read full

Ans. 10,30

87,67

12,78

 i) 30>10. Here, 30 is greater than 10.

ii) 87>67. Here,87 is greater than 67.

iii) 78>12. Here, 78 is greater than 12.

Ans: Here we compare the number of students in each grade.

s.no No of students’ Grade

  1. 30 A
  2. 40 B

As 40 is greater than 30,

Grade B is having more students than grade A.

Ans: let the number of weeks be x,

According to the question,

600 – 20x ≥ 400

Ans: Sunny has 20 balls. He gives away 5.

So after giving away, he has 20 – 5 = 15.

Honey has 30 balls. She gives away 7.

So after giving away, she has = 30 – 7 = 23.

So, here  23> 15. 23 is greater than 15.

Therefore, honey has a greater number of balls than sunny.

Ans: Marks obtained by Nirmat = 40

Marks obtained by Ritu = 50

Since,  50 is greater than 40, 50>40.

Therefore, Ritu scored higher than Nirmal.
