JEE Main 2026 Preparation: Question Papers, Solutions, Mock Tests & Strategy Unacademy » JEE Study Material » Mathematics » Geometric Tools

Geometric Tools

We also use shapes in drawing or other activities. To draw these shapes with the correct angle and measurements we need some specific tools. Those tools are known as “Geometric Tools”.

Table of Content
  •

We are surrounded by different kinds of shapes around us in this world. Shapes like circular, triangular, square, and many others. Each shape has its unique way of using them in the mathematics field. Studying these shapes of various measurement angles and dimensions is known as geometry. Many architectural designs are not possible to draw without the help of geometry and its tools.

To get the accurate measurement, angel, dimensions of the shapes or architectural drawings we need geometric tools. There are many different types of tools and have their uses.

Different types of geometric tools-

The different types of geometric tools are as follows:

  • The Ruler (or straight edge):
  • The rulers usually don’t have markings on them but, the ruler which is used in instrument boxes has graduated into centimeters along with one edge and also sometimes into inches along with another edge.
  • These rulers are mostly used for drawing lines or line segments and they are also used for measurements of lines present in different shapes.
  • The Compass:
  • A compass is a pair of pointers at one end and at another end, we have a pencil.
  • It is mostly used to draw circles or arcs and other circular shapes with different dimensions.
  • It is also used to mark off the equal lengths but not to measure them equally.
  • It is also used in architectural designs or computational designs but it is widely used in geometry.
  • The Divider:
  • A divider in which we have two pointers ends at both sides.
  • The divider is also used for the measurement of different shapes with the help of rulers.
  • Set Squares:
  • A set square is two triangular pieces.
  • One triangle has angles like 45 degrees, 45 degrees, and 90 degrees at the vertices.
  • The other triangle has angles like 30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90-degree vertices.
  • It is used to draw parallel lines and perpendicular lines.
  • Protractor:
  • A protractor is a semi-circle device with 180 degree-parts.
  • The measurement starts from 0 degrees on the right-hand side and ends at 180 degrees on the left-hand side and vice-versa.
  • It is used to draw and measure the angels.
  • It is available in 360 degrees in a full circle.

Use of Geometry tools:

  • With the help of these geometry tools, we can enhance many abilities and improve them in many different ways.
  • It is also used in many architectural designs of a building, houses, etc.
  • In the older day, only a few tools like a ruler and compass were used to know the dimensions and measurements of the different shapes.
  • Today, with a rapid increase in knowledge and science many geometry tools, are used for different purposes.
  • These are also used in science, maths, and many other fields.

Application of Geometry tools in Daily life:

  • In daily life, geometry is used by architects to get correct measurements and designs of the building they work on.
  • It is also used in the science field to track the stars and planets and also to measure the distance between the solar systems.
  • It is also used by artists to enhance their drawings and other artistic works like making vases.
  • It is also used on a sports field, mostly used by football players to measure the correct angle to score a perfect goal.

Conclusion:

Geometry has been playing a major role in different fields and also helps to enhance and improve the shapes that we use in daily life with help of different geometric tools. Greek mathematician Euclid formalized the process of making geometric figures with the use of specific tools. There are various examples like the construction of a line or constructing a line that will divide the angle into two equal parts.

There are 5 tools that are used in geometry.

In daily life, geometry is used in different fields like science, architecture, etc.

The different tools used in geometry are ruler, compass, divider, protractor, etc.

A protractor is a geometric tool that is used to measure the angles. The protractor has the marking of zero degrees to 180 degrees, which helps to measure the angle. The angle which is inside and outside will actually add up to 180 degrees.

A compass is a geometric tool that is used to construct circles or arcs of the circle.

The application of geometric tools is listed below-

(a) It is used by architects for the correct measurements and designs of the building.

(b) it is used on a sports field by football players so that they can measure the correct angle to score a perfect goal.

(c) It is used by artists so that they can enhance their drawings and other artistic works.

(d) It is even used in the science field to track the stars and planets

(e) It is used to measure the distance between the solar systems.
