The element carbon consists of a unique property called catenation. The organic compounds are integral for the preservation of life on earth and consist of complex molecules like genetic information bearing deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and proteins that constitute integral components of our blood, muscles, and skin. 

Organic compounds are mainly available in materials like clothing, fuels, polymers, dyes, and medicines, etc. This also makes covalent bonds with atoms of other elements like hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, and halogens. And when these compounds are studied thoroughly under different and separate divisions that process is known as organic chemistry.

General characteristics of Organic Compounds:

  1. Can be prepared in the laboratory as well as it can be isolated also. 
  2. For reactions that consist of organic compounds its processing rate is slower. 
  3. Organic compounds are soluble in organic solvents and are insoluble in water. 
  4. Organic compounds are very flammable.
  5. It maintains a complicated structure and a higher molecular rate. 
  6. It can contain nearly 90% of all familiar compounds. 

Importance of organic compounds:

  1. As we all know that all living organisms consist of carbon so that is why organic compounds are very significantly important. 
  2. Organic compounds have somehow become the basic structure of our life. Like carbohydrates, proteins, and fat. 
  3. Organic compounds are industrially significant. Organic compounds are used as analyzers, promoters, stabilizers, etc.
  4. Organic compounds are also a very influential component of our day-to-day cycle. 

Importance of organic chemistry:

It plays a very vital role in our daily basis because it is the study of life and every chemical reaction is related to life. Various peoples’ lives are related to the knowledge of organic chemistry, such as pharmacologists, doctors, veterinarians, dentists, chemical engineers, and chemists.

Importance of organic compounds in daily life: 

  1. Sucrose – is normally known as table sugar or cane sugar. These are soluble in water because they contain monoclinic crystals. These are also available in different types of vegetables and fruits. 
  1. Glucose – Glucose helps our body to function properly. Glucose is the main form of free sugar that circulates in the blood of animals and human beings.
  1. Starch – It is a white organic tasteless chemical that is produced by all green plants. It supplies energy to the human and animal tissues. It is a polysaccharide that contains glucose. 
  1. Acetic Acid – It is an organic compound that is colorless. Are mainly found universally in foodstuffs, water, and soil. It plays an important role in the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates in our body. It’s also helpful for weight loss and fat burning. 
  1. Fats & Oils – This is an essential food item that we consume daily. These are a primary source of stored energy. Fat and oils help the body perform numerous functions. 

Properties of organic compounds:

  • The organic compounds can be liquids, solids, or gasses at a normal room temperature.
  • The ionic compounds are solids at room temperature with higher melting points. Therefore, the Organic compounds have low melting points and boiling points.

Some compounds of organic compounds:

  1. Acetanilide – It is an odorless strong chemical of the leaf.
  2. Dibenzyl acetone – It is an organic compound composed of two benzyl groups connected to a middle carbonyl group. 
  3. p-Nitro acetanilide – It is a chemical compound that is a nitro derivative of acetanilide. 
  4. 2-Naphthol aniline dye – It is a red shade with an azo compound. It is especially used for coloring in textiles. 

Reactions of organic compounds:

The reactions involved in organic compounds are:

  1. Substitution reaction- this reaction is very much important in organic chemistry. 
  2. Redox – in this reaction the oxidation name of atoms is changed. 
  3. Elimination reactions – in this reaction one atom or a group of atoms is replaced by another atom or group of atoms.

Organic reactions play a very essential role in our day-to-day life. The organic reactions are the reaction that includes chemical reactions in the organic compounds. The organic chemistry reactions are of different types such as addition reactions, elimination reactions, substitution reactions, pericyclic reactions, rearrangement reactions, photochemical reactions, and redox reactions. The importance and need of organic compounds are a major part of our life.
