Electrorefining: Purification of Metals

This article includes electrolysis, clearly explaining the meaning of the Electrolytic process.

Table of Content
  •

The electrolysis process was given by Michael Faraday. It is the process in which the decomposition of ionic compounds occurs in a fluid form by passing a direct current through a compound. It’s mainly done in electrolytic cells. This process mainly includes the exchange of ions and atoms by adding or removing electrons. In this article, we will learn about the whole process of electrolytic refining.

Electrolytic Refining

The word “Refining” means the removal of impurities or some unused material. Electrolytic refining is when we purify or remove impurities in some metals. But as we say, the whole electrolysis process is done with the help of electrolytic cells. So in the electrorefining or electrorefining process, the electrolytic cell plays a major role and it will help in the purification process. Some metals are included in the refining process, but copper plays a major role. In an electrolytic refining process, impure metal is used as an anode and pure metal as a cathode.

Electro Refining Of Metals Or Purification Of Metals

As we say, the Electrorefining process is mainly used in purification of metals so there are some of the metals which can be purified.

  • Copper
  • Nickel
  • Tin

Copper

Copper plays a major role in electrorefining. Copper has various properties like it’s the best alloy and high thermal conductivity etc. Copper refining or Electrolytic copper electrorefining is purified with the help of the refining process. In this process, impure copper is used as anode and pure copper tubes as cathode. So in the electrolysis process, we are using (Cu++) as anode and (SO4-) as cathode. As we know from earlier classes, positive ions attract with negative ions, and in this case, also (Cu++) as a positive electrode will attach to (SO4-) as a negative electrode. Here, a negative electrode or cathode is deposited or attached with graphite. Concentrated material is removed. Then the positive electrode or anode impurities like some minerals silver or gold, mixed with the negative electrode or cathode (SO4-). Now, copper is removed from both the electrode anode and cathode.

Nickel

Nickel is metal and is mainly used to make stainless steel, coins, pipes, turbines, and alloy. Electrorefining of nickel is the process used in the purification of nickel. We also used pure metal or pure nickel as cathode and impure metal or nickel as anode. It’s usually carried out by an electrolytic cell, and it is used as a protective layer for removing impurities.

Tin

Tin is a metal, and it is mainly used for polishing or preventing metals from corrosion, and it is also used as an alloy. Electrorefining of tin is used for the purification of a tin. During this process, impurities are removed by mixing them in crude metal or tin crude metals. The Electrorefining process is used to produce a high grade of tin. It’s the best process for tin purification.

Purification Of Minerals

Electrorefining is used to purify minerals. There are some of the minerals which are used for refining.

Gold

Electrolytic gold refining is used to purify gold and remove the impurities. Here, a thin sheet of gold is used as a cathode or negative electrode and gold alloy as anode or positive electrode. When the transformation of ions takes place, pure gold is transferred to the cathode.

Silver

Electrolytic silver refining is used for the purification of silver. Impure or crude silver is used as an anode, and Pure silver or refined silver is used as a cathode. A nitric acid bath is used in these processes, and the whole process is the same as gold.

Crude Metal Purification

Crude metal is a process from which pure metal is obtained. There are some techniques used in the purification of crude metal.

  • Distillation
  • Liquation
  • Zone Refining
  • Chromatographic Methods

Conclusion

With the help of Electrolytic process notes, the students will be able to clarify concepts like Electrolytic refining, Electrolytic refining of metals, and Electrorefining process against impurities. We also read about some of the metals that help in electro refining or purification of metals. In addition, we also talked about the purification of minerals and crude metals.

Aluminium silicate zeolites are microporous three-dimensional crystalline solids. Zeolites have small, fixed-size openings that allow small molecules to pass through easily but not larger molecules; this is why they are sometimes referred to as molecular sieves.
