Multiplexer and Demultiplexer

The circuit which accepts only one input and presents multiple outputs is known as Demultiplexer. On the other hand, when the circuit accepts multiple inputs but presents only one output, it is known as Multiplexer.

In the world of Network transmission, Demultiplexer and Multiplexer are important and common circuits. These circuits help in transmitting the light signals through the fiber link signals, which are optical in nature. Multiplexers and Demultiplexers are a set of logical circuits. These two circuits are used in combinations, to make the communications bi-directional. Both of these circuits are Wavelength Division Multiplexing, Optical Time-Division Multiplexing, and Code Division Multiplexing. Among all three, the Wavelength Division Multiplexing is the commonly used way through which the wavelengths can increment the bandwidth. This is done by multiplexing the different optical carriers into one individual optical fibre. 

In addition to Wavelength Division Multiplexing, the technique through which the numerous signals are combined for concurrent transmission through a common frequency band. They help in allowing numerous users to share a communications channel. Optical time-division multiplexing is a system through which numerous signals are modulated by multiplexing them optically for forming a composite optical signal. It is one of the well-known approaches which segregates the high-speed channel into lower bit rates in a time domain. 

Multiplexer

The multiplexer is a circuit through which several input signals into one output signal. It means many into one signal. The circuits which operate at a high speed are required to have a multiplexer to be selected automatically. These circuits are used for performing high-speed switching that is constructed of electronic components. The multiplexing communication saves the operating costs. The device that performs the process of multiplexing is commonly known as Multiplexer. Multiplexers are of several types, like- 2 to 1, 8 to 1, 16 to 1, etc. 

Use of Multiplexers

  1. Telephone networking: In telephonic networking, several signals are integrated into one signal audio signal, with the help of multiplexers. 
  2. Memory in the Computers: Multiplexers transmit huge memories into the computer while reducing the total copper lines for connecting the memory to different parts in the computer circuit. 
  3. Communication system: The efficiency of the Communication styles is incremented by the application of Multiplexers. It helps in transmitting several types of data into a single transmission line. 
  4. Multiplexers help in the transmission of data signals of satellites through GPS Satellites. 

Demultiplexer

The demultiplexer is a circuit through which a single input into several outputs. It means one into many signals. The data distributor takes a single signal and generates several signals. In these cases, there is just one input line with several output lines. The device that performs the process of demultiplexing is commonly known as Demultiplexer. These devices act as a set of circuits that is capable of granting one data input and directing it into several output signals. It is the reverse of the Multiplexer circuit.  It ultimately breaks down a single stream of data into several streams of data. Demultiplexers are of several types, like- 1 to 2, 1 to 4, 1 to 8, 1 to 16, etc. 

Use of Demultiplexers 

  1. Demultiplexers are used in Communication systems. The communication system is bi-directional. They are used to transmit several data through a single transmission line. 
  2. Multiplexers and Demultiplexers are often worked in sync. 
  3. With the help of Demultiplexer, the output of the Arithmetic Logic Unit is stored in several registers. These outputs are inserted into the Demultiplexers as inputs. 
  4. Demultiplexers are used in aligning the parallel converter.

Demultiplexer and Multiplexer are common circuits. These circuits help in transmitting the light signals through the fibre link signals, which are optical in nature.
