Fluid and Liquid

This article will highlight the definitions and differences between Fluid and Liquid. Tap to learn more.

Fluid and Liquid are two words which are commonly confused. There is a small difference between them, but this article will help you to understand what that difference is.

Fluid

A fluid refers to any substance that flows evenly and smoothly under the influence of gravity. Flowing substances can be gases, liquids, or solids and include objects such as water or gasoline. They have viscosity which determines the speed at which they flow in a given direction and their density is the same throughout all parts of their container and they have uniform temperature within them.

Significance of Fluid

Fluid is important because it can be easily transported in pipes, tanks, other vessels and can be easily mixed. The presence of fluid means that it is possible to transport materials in them and the absence of fluid means that moving the material is not easy. Filling anything with fluid also saves space as compared to solid substances. Liquids are shown by a curved surface while gases are shown by a flat line.

Liquid

A liquid is a substance which has no definite shape and takes the shape of its container. The word liquid is also used to refer to a solution in which matter is not in a definite shape. Liquids are bodies of fluid that are in the physical state of being solid, liquid, or gaseous, and where it is possible for the substance to flow from one place to another. Liquids have non-uniform temperature within them and they can exist together with gases.

Significance of Liquid

Liquid can easily be moved through pipes, pumps or any other vessels because it has no fixed shape and can easily be dissolved. Liquids have less density than other substances as compared to solids. Liquids can easily be transported in tanks, vats and other vessels as it has no fixed shape. Liquids have different densities as compared to solids. Liquids are usually shown by a curved line since liquids are flowing substances.

Fluid and Liquid: Difference

  1. Fluids are substances that are in a physical state of being solid, liquid, or gaseous and it is possible for the substance to flow from one place to another.
  2. Liquids are substances that have no definite shape and take the shape of their container. The word liquid is also used to refer to a solution in which matter is not in a definite shape.
  3. A liquid is anybody of fluid that has a viscosity which determines the speed at which they flow their density remains the same throughout all parts of its container and they have uniform temperature within them.
  4. Fluids have non-uniform temperatures within them and they can exist together with gases.
  5. Liquids can easily be moved through pipes, pumps or any other vessels because they have no fixed shape and can easily be dissolved.
  6. Liquids have less density than other substances as compared to solids.
  7. Liquids can easily be transported in tanks, vats and other vessels as they have no fixed shape.
  8. Liquids are usually shown by a curved line since liquids are flowing substances.
  9. The presence of fluid means that it is possible to transport materials in them and the absence of fluid means that moving the material is not easy. Filling anything with fluid also saves space as compared to solid substances.
  10. Liquids are shown by a curved surface while gases are shown by a flat line.

Conclusion

Thus, Fluid and Liquid are different from each other in several ways. The main difference between the two is that Fluids are substances that are in a physical state of being solid, liquid or gaseous, but Liquids have no definite shape and take the shape of their container. The word liquid is also used to refer to a solution in which matter is not in a definite shape. Also, liquids have a viscosity which determines the speed at which they flow and their density remains the same throughout all parts of their container; whereas Fluids have non-uniform temperature within them and they can exist together with gases.
