Centre of Gravity and Centroid

What do we mean by the centre of gravity? What do we understand by the term centroid? What is the difference between the centre of gravity and centroid?

It is no wonder that physics is a vast field with several interesting topics. The Centre of gravity is also one of those topics. In physics, one can explain the centre of gravity as the imaginary point within a body of matter wherein, during the calculations, the overall mass of the body might be believed to be concentrated. On the other hand, the centroid can be explained as the geometric centre of a body. This was just to give a brief idea about the two topics. Now we will focus on them in detail.

Centre of Gravity

Both the words, centre as well as gravity come from the Greek words- ‘centrum’ and ‘gravitatio’. The centre of mass is represented by the centroid whereas the weight or the force between elements in the world under which the celestial bodies move can be explained as gravity. The concept regarding the centre of gravity can help design static structures such as bridges, buildings etcetera. It can also help in the prediction of the actions of a moving body as gravity acts in it.

Centroid

The centroid can be explained as the average location of all of the various points in an object. It was Archimedes who initially described the method through which the centroid of an object could be found.

Centre of Gravity and Centroid: Difference

There are a lot of differences between the centre of gravity and the centroid such as in terms of the definition, the calculation part and the way they are denoted. While the centre of gravity can be explained as the point wherein the overall weight of the whole-body acts, the geometric centre of a body can be called its centroid. The Centre of gravity can be thought of as the particular point at which the mass of the body gets focussed whereas the centroid helps to understand the centre of gravity for all the objects which have a uniform density. When it comes to the calculation part, one might find calculating the centre of gravity difficult since the weight of the body might not be distributed in a uniform manner. The centre of gravity can be calculated using – Cg*W = SXDw Here – X = Distance from the reference line Dw = Increment of weight W = Overall weight On the other hand, the centroid is simply the geometrical centre of the body. It is denoted as ‘c’ whereas the centre of gravity is depicted as ‘g’. Thus, these are a few of the primary differences between centroid and centre of gravity which help us to learn more about both concepts in detail.

Conclusion

As we come to conclude this, the concept regarding the centre of gravity and centroid has become much clearer. One can say that the location of the centre of gravity is at the intersection of the gravitational lines. The Centre of gravity can be simply explained as the centre of mass of a geometric system. It can be described as that point at which the weight of the body can be considered to be acting upon. The centre of gravity can be denoted by – ‘g’. On the other hand, the centroid can be explained as a geometric figure with uniform density, the centre of overall mass is its centroid. In other words, it can be simply stated as the geometrical centre which can be denoted by – ‘c’. The centroid of a body can also be described as the average location of the overall points of the object. It can be explained as the point at which for example, the cut out of a particular shape can be balanced in a perfect manner. Last but not the least, both centres of gravity as well as centroid are significant concepts that help us learn more about the world that we are a part of
