What Is JEE? 

JEE or the Joint Entrance Examination, is a centralised test for admission to engineering colleges in India. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

What Is IIT?

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) are a group of autonomous public engineering institutes in India. They are recognized as some of the best engineering colleges in the world.

Key Difference Between IIT and JEE

There are a few key differences between JEE and IIT:

• JEE is a centralised test for admission to all engineering colleges in India, while IIT is an institute
• The National Testing Agency conducts JEE, while IIT has no entrance exam

Detailed Differences Between IIT and JEE

Eligibility 

IIT: Class 12th with 75% marks in aggregate and should have secured a minimum of 60% marks in Class X.

JEE: Class 12th with 60% marks in aggregate or should have secured a minimum of 55% marks in Class XII.

Age Limit

IIT: The maximum age limit to appear for IIT admission is 25 years.

JEE: There is no age limit to appear for JEE Main and JEE Advanced examinations.

Number of Attempts

IIT: A candidate can attempt the IIT admission test maximum of three times.

JEE: A candidate can attempt the JEE Main exam a total of three times and JEE Advanced two times in consecutive years.

Application Process

IIT: Candidates need to register themselves at the official website of JoSAA.

JEE: The application process for JEE Main is completely online. Candidates have first to register themselves at the official website and then fill up the application form.

Exam Pattern

JEE: JEE Main exam has three papers – Paper-I (Mathematics), Paper II (Physics & Chemistry) and Paper III (Aptitude Test).

Syllabus

IIT: The syllabus for the IIT entrance test is based on the NCERT books of Class 11th and 12th.

JEE: JEE Main covers topics from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics of Class 11th and 12th.

What after Which Institute

IIT: IITs offer B.Tech, B.Arch and Dual Degree courses while JEE Advanced is the pathway to get admission into IITs only.

JEE: After qualifying JEE Main, candidates become eligible to appear for JEE Advanced examination which is the gateway for admissions into various NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes.

Counselling

IIT: The counselling process of IITs is conducted by JoSAA.

JEE: JEE Main counselling is conducted by CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board).
