Notes on Linear Algebra Topics

A subfield of mathematics that focuses on the study of mathematical structures that remain closed when subjected to the operations of addition and scalar multiplication. Let's learn more about it.

The study of linear combinations is what linear algebra is all about. To be able to carry out linear transformations, you will need to become familiar with the concepts of vector spaces, lines and planes, as well as various mappings. It contains matrices, vectors, and linear functions among its components. The study of linear sets of equations and the transformation properties of those sets is what this term refers to.

Linear Algebra Equations

The equation for the general linear system can be represented as

a1x2+ a2x2……….+anxn = b

Here,

The notation a’s stands for the coefficients.

x’s – represent the things that aren’t known.

b is an abbreviation for the constant.

There is a set of equations known as a system of linear algebraic equations. This set of equations can be found. It is possible to find a solution to the system of equations by employing matrices.

The linear function, such as or, is obeyed by it.

(x1,……..xn) → a1x1 +……….+anxn

  • Detailed explanations of the three most

Important ideas that must be understood before beginning linear algebra are provided here. They are as follows:

  • Vector spaces
  • The Matrix
  • Linear Functions

All of these three ideas are connected to one another in such a way that a mathematical representation of a set of linear equations can be constructed using just these three ideas.

Vector spaces

The study of vector spaces and the linear transformations that can be performed between them is what linear algebra is all about, as we are aware. A vector is a type of physical quantity that possesses both magnitude and direction, according to the dictionary definition of the term. A vector space can be thought of as a collection of things that are referred to as vectors. These vectors can be added to one another and scaled by being multiplied by numbers that are referred to as scalars. Scalars are typically assumed to be real numbers; however, there are vector spaces that allow scalar multiplication by non-real numbers, such as complex numbers or naturally any field. In general, real numbers are used as scalars.

If we take any vector space to be denoted by the letter V and assume that it contains the scalars m and n and the elements a, b, and c, then we can write the vector axioms as follows:

  • Commutative of addition: a + b = b + a
  • Associativity of addition: a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c
  • Additive identity: a + 0 = 0 + a = a, where 0 is an element in V called zero vector.
  • Additive inverse: a + (-a) + (-a) + a = 0, a, -a belongs to V.

These four axioms establish that the vector space V is an abelian group when the addition operation is performed on it.

Other axioms include the identity element of scalar multiplication, distributivity of scalar multiplication with respect to vector addition and field addition, and so on.

For example, m(a) = ma; n(a + b) = na + nb

One element of a particular vector space might exhibit more than one set of characteristics. A sequence, a function, a polynomial, or a matrix, for instance, could all qualify as elements in this context. The properties of things like these, which are shared by all vector spaces and are therefore familiar to those spaces, have an effect on linear algebra.

Linear function

An algebraic equation is said to be linear if every term in the equation is either a constant or the product of a constant and a single independent variable raised to the power 1. In the field of linear algebra, vectors are utilised when developing linear functions. Some examples of the different kinds of vectors that can be restated in terms of the functions that vectors perform are as follows:

The following is the mathematical definition of a linear function:

A function L : Rn → Rm is linear if

(i) L(x + y) = L(x) + L(y)

(ii) L(αx) = αL(x)

for all x, y ∈ Rn, α ∈ R

Linear Algebra Matrix

A specific category of linear functions can be referred to as matrices. The process of organising information in relation to specific linear functions results in the formation of a matrix. Since the matrix represents the most important piece of information in linear algebra, it almost makes an appearance there.

The following is one possible mathematical definition for this relation:

A is an m × n matrix, then we get a linear function L : Rn → Rm by defining

L(x) = Ax

or

Ax = B

Numerical Linear Algebra

The term “applied linear algebra” can also be used interchangeably with “numerical linear algebra.” The study of how matrix operations can be used to create computer algorithms is the focus of the field of applied linear algebra. These computer algorithms are then used to solve the problems that arise in continuous mathematics in an effective and precise manner. Numerous methods of matrix decomposition are utilised in the field of numerical linear algebra in order to find solutions to common linear algebraic problems. Some examples of these problems include locating Eigenvalues, finding the least-squares optimal solution, and solving systems of linear equations. When it comes to numerical linear algebra, some of the methods for decomposing matrices include Eigen decomposition, Single value decomposition, and QR factorization, amongst others.

The Applications of Linear Algebra

The following are some examples of applications that make use of linear algebra:

  • Positioning in Search Engines – The development of Google represents one of the most significant and widespread applications of linear algebra. Linear algebra is utilised in the development of the most complex ranking algorithm.
  • Signal Analysis: This technique sees extensive use in encoding, analysing, and otherwise manipulating a wide variety of signals, including audio, video, and still images, amongst others.
  • The field of linear programming makes extensive use of linear algebra, and one of its most important applications is the optimization technique that comes from linear programming.
  • Coding theory makes use of something called error-correcting codes. With the assistance of linear algebra, encoded data that has been slightly altered should be recoverable even if it has been encrypted. The hamming code is an example of the type of significant error-correcting code.
