A blood relationship is defined as any relationship formed by birth or marriage. Ex: Any birth relation will be mother, father, son, daughter, etc., and any marriage relation will be father-in-law, mother-in-law, etc. Most competitive exams include a section on blood relations as part of the reasoning section. You must determine the relationship between specific family members depending on the information provided.

Meaning & Definition of Blood Relation in Verbal Reasoning:

Blood Relation

Blood relations refer to any relationship formed between two or more people as a result of their birth. It is classified as a relationship formed between two people as a result of their birth rather than their marriage or other factors.

This is a biological connection. Remember that while a wife and husband are biologically related, they are also biological parents of their own children.

In the same way, our blood relatives include our brother, sister, paternal grandfather, paternal grandmother, maternal grandfather, maternal grandmother, grandson, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and so on.

Types of Blood Relation in Verbal Reasoning

There are two categories of blood relatives:

  • Paternal blood relation

  • Maternal blood relation

Paternal blood relation

This type of blood relationship can be divided into three categories:

Father’s previous generations include great grandfather, great grandmother, grandfather, grandmother, and so on.

Father’s parallel generations include uncles (brothers), aunts (sisters), and so on.

Future generations of fathers, sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters

Maternal blood relation

This category of blood relations can be further divided into three categories:

Maternal great grandfather, maternal great grandmother, maternal grandfather, maternal grandmother, and other maternal generations

Maternal uncles, maternal aunts, and other relatives of the mother.

Sons, daughters, grandson’s, granddaughter’s, and other future generations of mothers

Family Tree

A tree has roots that are firmly planted, and then it has a stem that branches out and bears leaves.

The same can be said of a family tree, in which our forefathers and mothers serve as the roots, followed by their children and grandchildren, etc.

A family tree is a visual depiction of our ancestors. A family tree not only helps us better understand our lineage, but it also helps us to understand our relationships with other people who share common ancestors.

Type of Questions from CAT Blood Relations

The question types can be divided into the following categories based on previous years’ papers:

  1. Direct questions
  2. Questions based on puzzles
  3. Questions based on codes
  4. One-person blood relationship
  5. Relationship of mixed blood

Puzzle Relation

In this type of question, the candidate is required to evaluate the provided information, create a family chart, and then respond to the question.

Coded Relation

In these types of questions, relationships are represented by specialised codes or representations such as +,-,*,$, percent, and so on. After that, the candidate must examine some provided codes in order to identify the relationship between a group of people or to demonstrate a given relationship in coded form.

Deciphering Jumbled up Descriptions

A roundabout explanation is given in the form of certain small relationships in this type of question, and you must evaluate the entire chain of relations and decipher direct relationship between the people involved.
