What is a Cuboid?
A cuboid is a 3D shape with six surfaces. These six surfaces are all of different sizes and different surface areas. Generally, cube and cuboid are misunderstood as the same. A cube is a 3D shape with all the sides and surface areas equal, but in cuboid all the sizes and surface areas are different. A cuboid in geometry is known as hexahedron which means it has six surfaces or six faces.
Usually, there are two types of cuboids, regular cuboid and irregular cuboid. Regular cuboid means a cuboid with all sides and surface areas equal, which means it is a cube. While irregular cuboid means a cuboid with one or all the sides and surface areas different from each other. This means, every cube is a cuboid but every cuboid is not a cube.
How to Calculate the Volume of a Cuboid?
A cuboid contains three sides. The first side is known as length, second side is known as breadth and the third side is known as height. We denote length with l, breadth with b and height with h. To know the volume of a cuboid we multiply all the three sides, i.e., length (l) x breadth (b) x height (h) which results in volume of the cuboid.
As we multiply the three sides while calculating volume, the unit of it is always in cube, i.e., cubic meter, cubic centimeter, etc.
For example, we have a cuboid with length (l) = 2 cm, breadth (b) = 3 cm and height (h) = 1 cm, then we calculate volume of cuboid as following:
Volume of cuboid = length (l) x breadth (b) x height (h) = 2 x 3 x 1 = 6 cubic cm or 6 cm cube.
Here we just not write 6 cm but 6 cubic cm as we are calculating the volume of the cuboid.
Volume of Cuboid Formula
So, from the above, it is very clear that the formula of volume of cuboid is derived by multiplying all the three sides of a cuboid, thus,
Volume of a cuboid = length (l) x breadth (b) x height (h)
Examples of Volume of Cuboid Conversion
1. A cuboid is having length (l) = 3 cm, breadth (b) = 4 cm and height (h) = 5 cm, then, we calculate the volume of a cuboid as following:
Volume of cuboid = length (l) x breadth (b) x height (h) = 3 x 4 x 5 = 60 cubic cm or 60 cm cube.
2. A cuboid is having length (l) = 10 cm, breadth (b) = 50 cm and height (h) = 60 cm, then, we calculate the volume of a cuboid as following:
Volume of cuboid = length (l) x breadth (b) x height (h) = 10 x 50 x 60 = 30000 cubic cm or 30000 cm cube.
3. A cuboid is having length (l) = 100 cm, breadth (b) = 1 cm and height (h) = 1 cm, then, we calculate the volume of a cuboid as following:
Volume of cuboid = length (l) x breadth (b) x height (h) = 100 x 1 x 1 = 100 cubic cm or 100 cm cube.
4. A cuboid is having length (l) = 3.5 cm, breadth (b) = 4.5 cm and height (h) = 5 cm, then, we calculate the volume of a cuboid as following:
Volume of cuboid = length (l) x breadth (b) x height (h) = 3.5 x 4.5 x 5 = 78.75 cubic cm or 78.75 cm cube.
5. A cuboid is having length (l) = 25 cm, breadth (b) = 30 cm and height (h) = 2 cm, then, we calculate the volume of a cuboid as following:
Volume of cuboid = length (l) x breadth (b) x height (h) = 25 x 30 x 2 = 1500 cubic cm or 1500 cm cube.
Thus, this is how by multiplying all the sides, we get volume of the cuboid.
