Logical Sequence of Words

What are words, and how do we form a logical sequence of words? Click the link to know more.

Every sentence that we utter has to have logic behind it. The laws of the universe are governed by logic and are established on its basis. But the way to create sentences or formulate laws hinges on building a logical sequence of words.

Without a logical sequence of words, no sense can be made of anything. Therefore, building a logical sequence of words is imperative to creating anything meaningful in this world. But before we can understand how to build a logical sequence of words, let us understand what and how words are used in languages.

What are words?

Words are a sequence of phonemes, according to the study of linguistics. There are many sequences of sounds that can elicit some sort of a meaning. There is no fixed description as to what constitutes a word, since words differ from one language to another. For example, languages that are taught by written scripts, such as English and other languages derived from ancient Greek and Roman texts, have a clear distinction between words and letters.

However, languages that do not have a written script and are rather based completely on verbal teachings tend to have meanings attached to the sentence as a whole rather than individual words. For the sake of simplicity, we can describe words as any combination of letters that when pronounced in a specific manner holds a meaning on its own. Although most words make sense on their own, there are some words like “the”, “or”, “if”, etc. that only make sense when used in conjunction with other words.

Logical sequence of words is used in linguistics to create phrases and clauses that combine to form sentences. It is this combination of words that has been used across centuries to convey all sorts of emotions, commands and ideas. The study of words and their etymology is also important in analysing how language has changed across centuries.

Logical Sequence of Words Reasoning

To create a logical sequence, it is also imperative to have a reasoning behind it. Similarly, when creating a logical sequence of words, a specific reasoning has to be present to back the sequence. What types of reasoning can be applied to create logical sequences of words? Let us have a look.

Deductive Reasoning

It revolves around making an assumption about something and then using facts or observations to prove the assumption or refute the assumption. It tries to deduce whether an assumption is wrong or correct based on already established facts.

Analogical Reasoning

Analogical reasoning uses the tendency of human brains to identify patterns. It revolves around identifying similarities between words and then extending this to create a pattern.

Cause and Effect Reasoning

Every cause has an effect. By linking a word that is the cause of a word that acts as an effect, we can create a logical sequence between words. It can also help make a logical sequence of words, where doing the action suggested by one word will lead to doing the action mentioned in the other word.

Examples of logical sequences of words

Let us look at examples that can help us understand how to create a logical sequence of words

1. Build a logical sequence of the following words

    1. Elephant
    2. Cat
    3. Mosquito
    4. Tiger
    5. Whale

Answer:

We can start by trying to make an assumption about all the words listed, but there is no common assumption that applies to all the words. Except for mosquito, all the other words are animals, but that does not build a common assumption.

Now let us try to identify a pattern between these words. The first two words, elephant and cat are animals. Elephants are larger than cats in size. Now let us try to extend the size comparison pattern to the other words. A cat is larger than a mosquito. An elephant is also larger than a cat. So, we can create a sequence with respect to size; so, the sequence can be Elephant, Cat and Mosquito.

The next word is tiger. Tiger is larger than a cat but smaller than an elephant. So the sequence can be altered to Elephant, Tiger, Cat and Mosquito. The last word is whale. A whale is larger than an elephant. Therefore, the final sequence of words can be given as Whale, Elephant, Tiger, Cat and Mosquito. This creates a logical sequence of words.

2. Build a logical sequence of the following words

    1. Book
    2. Pulp
    3. Timber
    4. Jungle
    5. Paper

Answer:

We know that all the words are related to paper making since all these are products used in some stage of the process. Therefore, we will try to use cause and effect reasoning to create a logical sequence between these given words.

The first effect can be the jungle, which is where timber can be sourced from. Therefore, we can create a sequence as Jungle, Timber. From this timber, the pulp to create paper is extracted. Therefore, timber is the effect that causes the pulp. Hence, the sequence can be given as; Jungle, Timber, Pulp.

Paper is formed from the pulp that is extracted from the timber. Hence, the sequence of this process can be given as Jungle, Timber, Pulp and Paper. Finally, the paper that is created from this pulp is used to create a book. Hence, books are the cause of paper. Therefore, the sequence can be given as Jungle, Timber, Pulp, Paper and Book.

Conclusion

Words are a sequence of phonemes, according to the study of linguistics. They are any sequence of sounds that can elicit some sort of a meaning. There is no fixed description as to what constitutes a word since words differ from one language to another.

To create a logical sequence, it is also imperative to have a reasoning behind it. Similarly, when creating a logical sequence of words, a specific reasoning has to be present to back the sequence. Without a logical sequence of words, no sense can be made of anything. Therefore, building a logical sequence of words is imperative to creating anything meaningful in this world.
