Area of a Square Formula

Area of a square can be defined as the total number of small squares of 1 x 1 needed to make the big square.

Area of any shape can be defined as the total surface it requires to fit. In the case of a square, the total number of small squares of 1 x 1 required to cover the big square is known as the area of that big square.

The area is always measured in square units, for example, sq. cm, sq. m, sq. ft., sq. inches, etc.

To find the area of the square, we need to multiply one side of the square with the other side, but as we already know that all the sides of the square are equal, we can also calculate the area of the square by calculating the square of the sides.

So, the formula to find the area of square is,

Area of square = side x side or side2

Examples

1. Find the area of a square with one of its sides 5 cm.

To find the area of the square, we can calculate,

Area of a square = side x side = 5 x 5 = 25 sq. cm

 2. Find the area of a square with one of its side 12.5 m

To find the area of the square, we can calculate,

Area of a square = side x side = 12.5 x 12.5 = 156.25 sq. m

 3. The area of a square is 36 sq. cm. Find the sides of the square.

To find the sides of the square, we can calculate,

Area of a square = side x side

36 = side x side

By calculating the square root of 36, we will get the side of the square.

Thus, the side of the square is 6 cm.

4. The area of a square is 49 sq. cm. Find the sides of the square.

To find the sides of the square, we can calculate,

Area of a square = side x side

49 = side x side

By calculating the square root of 49, we will get the side of the square.

Thus, the side of the square is 7 cm.

5. A side of a square garden is 10 ft. The cost of grass maintenance of the garden per sq. ft is 20 Rs. Find the total cost of grass maintenance of the square garden.

To find the cost of grass maintenance, we need to find the area of the square garden.

To find the area of the square garden, we can calculate,

Area of the square garden = side x side = 10 x 10 = 100 sq. ft

Now, the cost per sq. ft is 20 Rs., so the cost for maintenance of 100 sq. ft will be,

100 sq. ft x 20 Rs. = 2000 Rs.

Thus, it would cost 2000 Rs. for the grass maintenance of the square garden.
