In  India , Lokpal plays a critical role in investigating corruption which is related to the public interest. Lokpal holds the power to investigate any administrative body including prime minister or any other person related to the assembly of India. In the case of India any one can file a complaint against any person who is related to the administrative body. The Lokpal of India is selected by a long procedure including the president of India consulting with the prime minister, opposition leader and the chief justice of India. Then they decide the name, which has to hold the position of Lokpal. The Lokpal of India holds the status similar to the chief justice of India.       

Lokpal 

In India Lokpal holds a massive power to investigate any case, which is related to the assembly. Lokpal of India is elected for tenure of five years and they have the power to choose their own stuff. In order to investigate any case Lokpal can use any governmental agency including CBI or the investigation wing to investigate any kind of case. Lokpal of India consists of eight members, in which four persons belong to any high court of India. Rest of them belong from non-judicial part and they have to hold experiences from all indian services. Shri Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose is the first chairperson of Lokpal of India. 

Lokpal meaning

The word Lokpal can be described as the friend of people that Lokpal holds the power to investigate over any kind of case. To reduce the corruption in India an act was introduced in India named as “The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013”. This Lokpal bill has some restrictions including that the committee does not investigate any cases related to the national security system. Another investing agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), is also kept out of the investing area of Lokpal. This authority also holds the power to investigate and seize any suspected thing or person, under the Civil Procedure Code to start the investigation at the preliminary level. Hence, the Lokpal of India is a powerful committee that has the power to investigate higher authorities including the prime minister of India and so on.             

Role of Lokpal

In the case of India, Lokpal can investigate any national level case related to any minister of India including the prime minister. The committee also can investigate any governmental employees who belong from any job category including A, B, C, and D.  Lokpal of India investigates by following some laws including Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Anyone who is an Indian citizen can file a case in the committee. In some cases Lokpal show their respect for central government employees and pass the cases to Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) for investing more precisely. In order to investigate any cases of Lokpal, investing authorities have to submit their report within 60 days. In order to investigate a case the Lokpal bench first considers the preliminary report of the investigation then the committee decides how to proceed further with the case. Overall, the committee follows a strict procedure to investigate any case related to the higher authority of India.      

Lokpal of India

Several bills were introduced in the Lok sabha to introduce the committee of Lokpal in India. The members of Lok sabha first tried to introduce the bill in the year of 1968. In the year of 2010 the draft bill passed in the lok sabha. After three years in 2013 the bill finally passed in the Lok sabha. Currently Pinaki Chandra Ghose holds the position of the chairperson in the committee of Lokpal. There are other members including Pradip Kumar Mohanty, Abhilasha Kumari as the judicial member. On the other hand, Dinesh Jain, Archana Ramasundaram, Mahender Singh and Dr. Indrajeet Prasad Gautam plays the role of a non judicial member of the committee. At the same time Bharat Lal (IFS) maintains the security measures of the committee.   

Lokayuktas

State Members of the Lokpal are known as the Lokayuktas; they are selected on the basis of recommendations of the members of the selection committee. The president of India selects the members of the Lokayuktas. The Lokpal committee holds 50% members of the judicial background and remaining 50% from the non- judicial background. All the members of Lokpal hold a massive administrative power, same as the judges of the Supreme Court. In the case of the chairman of the Lokpal, the person also holds the power same as the chief justice of India.     

Inquiry

In order to investigate any case Lokpal of India can take help from any investing agency including CBI. The committee wants the report within the 60 days from the staging of the investigation. The committee has the power to investigate any case related to the prime minister of India excluding international affairs, atom and space research related issues. The committee has the power to seize any kind of assets related to the investigation. Overall Lokpal holds high power to investigate any kind of case. 

Conclusion

In the case of India the committee of Lokpal made up of eight members. The committee has powers to investigate any person related to the assembly of India. Overall this committee acts like an independent body but follows the laws and legislation of India.
