The great World War-I of 1914 has caused several disruptions to the world including colonization, redraw of international boundaries and other significant changes. This study discusses the redraw of national boundaries, explanation on national boundaries and important international boundaries of the world. Moreover, this study showcases the significance of Durand lines in national and international boundaries. International boundaries of Europe and the Middle East have been redrawn as a consequence of World War-I. Some of the major reasons responsible for the redraw of boundaries are social, political, cultural revolutions in Africa, Europe and Asian countries after the First World War.

Redraw of national boundaries

The maps of countries such as Africa, Asia and Europe were much different a century before the commencement of the First World War. In 1914, a war was declared by Austria-Hungary on Serbia in which millions of citizens were slaughtered. This merciless act of killing people resulted in redrawing of borderlines between countries and it has reshaped the economies as well. The “Treaty of Versailles”, signed in 1919 is regarded as one of the major events that have carved new countries. Russia became an independent country as the Baltic State was given to Germany under the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. Moreover, several new regions such as Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia were created. Romania was enlarged after the First World War and Poland was rebuilt out of Austria, Hungary and Russian and German territories. 

The international political map continued to undergo drastic changes due to the Second World War. One of the most noticeable changes has occurred in Poland. The borders of Poland were shifted majorly and the decisions regarding redrawing of Poland’s boundaries were made at the Potsdam Conference of 1945. 

National boundaries

India shares its boundaries with several other countries aligned at the borders of India. There are in total seven countries that share their boundaries with India. Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Maldives and Sri Lanka are the countries with which India shares its national boundaries. In terms of area, India is considered to be the seventh-largest country in the world. The total geographical area of India has a land border of 15,106.07 Km along with a long coastline of around 7,516.6 Km. The border lengths of neighboring countries of India are 106 Km (Afghanistan, smallest border), Bangladesh 4096.7 Km (largest border). Besides, India shares its sea borders with countries like the Maldives and Sri Lanka. India is a vast country with multiple states and regions. Almost 17 states of India share their boundaries with international countries. For instance, states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar share their borders with Nepal, whereas Meghalaya and West Bengal share their borders with Bangladesh. Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and other northern states share their borders with Pakistan. Studies of lines and borders of India is significant to understand which states share their borders with other countries.

Important international boundaries, mainly separating two countries and borderline designations helps to identify the territorial limits. It mainly creates space between some sovereign states which are under the entire jurisdiction and also unaffected by the other governments. The international boundary is one of the main boundaries in the world which is spaced among the United States and Canada. 

Durand lines

The Durand line was established in 1893 and is also among British India and the Emirate of Afghanistan and it is also 2,670 kilometres. The main acceptance of this line is only for Sir Mortimer Durand, who was mainly introducing the person AbdorRaḥmānKhān who is the Amir of Afghanistan. The main reason for this line was to create the “international border between British India and the Emirate of Afghanistan”. In addition, the main aim of the Durand Line is to set their spheres and remove the space conflicts with diplomatic relations. The Durand Line was created by the British and created a buffer zone between Russia and India. The British enforcement deliberately established this Durand line and removed the problems of the Indo-Afghan frontier. It also divides the Pashtuns, which was never popular in Afghanistan and which only claims for Pashtunistan.
