Presently, there are 58 Union Ministries and 93 departments under the Government of India. The Ministries and Departments of the Government of India are created by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister of India. A minister controls the ministry, and the department is under the control of a secretary.
Ministries function to conduct necessary communications to make arrangements and procedures for the execution, implementation and monitoring of activities and also to protect public interests. Departments of the Government of India are involved in taking legal and administrative actions which are needed to uphold constitutional laws.
The central power is the Prime Minister’s Office, which is referred to as the Innermost Wheel. The next position is given to the ministers who are close to the Prime Minister, which is often referred to as the informal wheel (Inner Cabinet). The Cabinet Ministers (15-20 ministers) fall under the next wheel. They hold the portfolios and formulate the policies of the state. The next wheel consists of other ministers who are in charge in small departments or maybe helpers to the cabinet ministers. The outer wheels consist of members of the majority party.

The role and responsibilities discharged by the Prime Minister are assisted by the staffing agency known as the Prime Minister’s Office. All the references and intimations of the administrations have to come to the Prime Minister.
The civil aviation industry is controlled, formulated, developed and regulated by the ministry of civil aviation. The ministry looks after the planning, implementation, growth and expansion of the civil aviation sector.
The Ministry of Home affairs monitors internal security, shares intelligence inputs, issues advisories, expands manpower, financial support and guidance to the state government to maintain peace and harmony.
The country’s railway transport is being controlled responsibly by the Ministry of Railways. The ministry operates the state-owned Indian railway, which enjoys a monopoly in railway transport.
It is the overall responsibility of the ministry of coal to determine the policies and strategies in respect of exploration and development of coal.
