The ISKCON Temple and Its Origin

This article covers information about the Hindu religious organisation called ISKCON or International Society for Krishna Consciousness, previously known as the Hare Krishna movement. There are hundreds of ISKCON temples around the world. Read on to know more.

The Hindu religious organisation ISKCON stands for International Society for Krishna Consciousness and was previously known as the Hare Krishna movement. It was founded in New York City in 1996 and has hundreds of patrons and temples worldwide, including places like the US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Brazil, the UK, Indonesia, Germany, Italy, etc. These temples are generally equipped with excellent accommodation facilities for members and non-members. The temples also have modern facilities such as a multi-vision cinema theatre, computer-assisted presentation theatre, a Vedic library, a didactic library, etc. ISKCON adherents believe that Lord Krishna is the supreme god and wellspring of all of god’s incarnations. Radha is revered as the pinnacle of ecstatic devotion as Krishna’s feminine counterpart. The ISKCON movement is heavily influenced by preaching. The founder-guru’s publications and chanting of Hare Krishna hymns in public are the primary means this group’s members propagate Krishna’s consciousness. Within the organisation, these operations are referred to as Sankirtan.

ISKCON Temple in Bangalore

The Sri Radha Krishna Temple is located at Rajajinagar, Bengaluru, and is a prominent tourist attraction and pilgrimage centre. It was completed in 1997 and honours Radha and Krishna, the Hindu deities. The temple is known for its stunning architecture, which comes to life at night. The temple doors are opened between 4:15 am to 5:00 am, 7:15 am to 1:00 pm, and finally at 4:00 pm.

History of ISKCON

ISKCON was founded by AC Bhaktivedanta Swami in 1966 in New York City to promote the practice of Bhakti Yoga or Krishna Consciousness as a means to enlightenment. ISKCON devotes itself to the worship of Lord Krishna, whom they believe is the Supreme Being. The group has opened hundreds of temples, centres, and rural settlements in the last 53 years. The Food for Life Project (a free food distribution programme) and eco-villages, to name a few community initiatives, were all started by ISKCON, in addition to the more than 100 vegetarian eateries that the organisation has developed. In 1976, they also established the Bhaktivedanta Institute (BI), a scientific research department dedicated to promoting Vedic insights in studying life’s origins and the natural world.

Architecture

The Bangalore ISKCON temple’s appeal lies in its blend of modern and traditional architecture and a 17m-high gold-plated flag that stands with Kalash Shikaras that are 8.5 m tall. The welcoming roadway, Rajagopuram shrine, has beautiful archways with a fountain, making it a tourist attraction. In this, the art is built so that the presence of Shri Radhe Krishna is felt everywhere. The temple complex also has an amazing garden and an amphitheatre where several cultural programmes are conducted. It also has a cow protection program, a multi-vision cinema, and a museum.

Festivals and Activities at ISKCON Temple

ISKCON temple authorities carry out several activities. Cultural teaching and initiatives teach people about spiritual practices and forms of worship—the Sri Krishna Balarama Ratha Yatra ushers in the holiday season. On February 26, Lord Balarama appears as Nithyananda Prabhu, and Sri Nityananda Trayodashi is observed. Spirituality and Krishna consciousness are instilled in youngsters in classes V through IX via artistic training courses. Education programs follow these laws as those for young adults. Krishnashraya and Life Sublime, on either hand, are spiritual schedules that are followed in many locations, including homes, in order to bridge the gap between individuals and Lord Krishna, the Supreme Lord. Lord Krishna’s favourite animals, cows, are given improved living circumstances at ISKCON temples.

ISKCON is a religious organisation with millions of devotees worldwide, including Alfred Ford. The Sri Radha Krishna Chandra Temple in Banglore’s Hare Krishna Hills is said to be ISKCON’s largest temple complex in the world. It is well-connected by various modes of transportation.
