What is a Software Technology Park?

Software technology park is a group of software companies that develop software and export them. Arvind Kumar is the CEO of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), which is a science and technology organisation. The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology was founded in 1991 to support, promote, and grow software exports from India. STPI’s headquarters are located in New Delhi, and the organisation has 61 centres across the country.

STPI launched the India BPO Promotion Scheme as part of the Digital India strategy. The goal of this initiative is to support the establishment of 48,300 seats for BPO/ITES firms across India. The scheme’s nodal agency is the STPI, which is a part of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The Director-General of the STPI has announced the opening of 48,000 such seats around the country, with a target workforce of 72,450 people.

Software Technology Park Schemes

The Government of India established the software technology scheme for the purpose of exporting computer software and professional services by using communication networks or physical media.

The software technology park scheme is unique as it focuses on a single product/industry, i.e., computer software. This project includes 100 percent concept of the government with respect to Export Oriented Units (EOU) and Export Processing Zones.

Benefits of Software Technology Scheme

• Projects that cost Rs.100 million or less with Indian investment are cleared by jurisdictional software technology park scheme authorities.
• It permits 100 percent foreign equity.
• All hardware and software imports into STP units are duty-free, and the import of second-hand capital goods is also permitted.
• Capital goods re-export is permitted.
• Capital goods purchased from the Domestic Tariff Area are eligible for benefits such as excise duty exemption and reimbursement of Central Sales Tax.
• Capital invested by foreign entrepreneurs, such as know-how fees, royalties, and dividends, can be freely repatriated after payment of income taxes due.

There are around 61 software technology parks in India. The main headquarters of the software technology park is in New Delhi. Recently, a new software technology park was set up in Kohima Nagaland.

3. Software technology park in Gurugram, India: Its Director is Paritosh Dandriyal. It has the sub-centres in the cities Jaipur Jammu jodhpur Manali Shimla and Srinagar.
4. Software technology park in Gandhinagar, India: Its Director is Sonal Bhatwadekar. It has the sub-centres in the city surat.
5. Software technology park in Kolkata, India: Its Director is Manjit Kumar Nayak. It has sub-centres in Durgapur, Haldia, Kharagpur and Siliguri.
