Principle of Working of the hygrometer

Hygrometers work on the principle of evaporative cooling. When water evaporates from a surface, it gets cold because the water molecules absorb heat from the surface during the process of evaporation. As a result of this phenomenon, the wet-bulb temperature is constantly lower than that of the dry bulb. The same idea applies to the immediate cooling effect that occurs during bathing.

Other types of hygrometers detect changes in the weight, volume, or transparency of various substances due to changes in relative humidity.

3. Dew Point Hygrometer

The dew-point hygrometer is typically composed of a polished mirror (generally made of metal) that is cooled at a specified pressure and vapor content until moisture just starts to settle on it. The dew point is the temperature at which condensation starts to form on a metal surface.

4. Psychrometer

The psychrometer is a hygrometer that is made up of two thermometers: a wet-bulb thermometer and a dry-bulb thermometer. By measuring evaporation, they can calculate relative humidity. A wet cloth is wrapped around the enlarged side of the wet-bulb thermometer. The temperature will fluctuate if you completely rotate both thermometers or blow air over the bulbs for a long period of time. The difference in temperature between the wet bulb and the dry bulb may be used to determine the amount of humidity in the atmosphere.
