SECI (Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited) is a CPSU under the administrative control of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) that was established on September 20, 2011 to aid in the implementation of the National Solar Mission (NSM) and the achievement of the goals set forth therein. It is the first CPSU devoted only to solar energy. It was founded as a section-25 (not-for-profit) corporation under the Companies Act of 1956. However, in 2015, the firm was changed into a Section-3 company under the Companies Act by an amendment made by the Government of India. In 2013, the company’s scope was expanded to include the full renewable energy area.

SECI has a significant role to play in the growth of the RE industry, based on the current prognosis. The firm is a nodal organisation for the execution of a number of MNRE initiatives. SECI has also moved into turnkey solar project development for a number of PSUs and government organizations. The firm also has license for Category 1 power trading and is operating in this field by trading solar electricity generated by projects put up under its plans.
