Garden Reach Workshop was founded in 1884 as a tiny privately held firm here on eastern bank of Hooghly River and renamed in 1916. In 1960, the Indian government nationalised the enterprise. In September 2006, it was granted Miniratna status, along with financial & operating autonomy. It is the first Indian dockyard to construct 100 warships.
