Every state and union territory of India has unique symbols like a state bird, state animal, state flower, a state tree, etc. These state symbols help in highlighting the uniqueness of every state. State Symbol
The emblem of Uttarakhand is diamond-shaped with blue borders on a white background, supported by the stylised mountain peaks of the Great Himalayas. Four streams below these peaks flow from left to right. The Lion Capital of Ashoka, India’s national emblem, is superimposed on its crest with a red background. The national motto, i.e. Satyamev Jayate (truth alone triumphs), is superimposed on its crest below the emblem on the red background. Below the emblem in blue fonts, it reads “The State of Uttarakhand”.
State Bird
The Himalayan Monal is the state bird of Uttarakhand. This bird is about 70 cm in length and native to the Himalayan shrublands and forests. Some notable features of this bird include a metallic, long green crest and a white rump, visible during their flights. These birds are native to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal’s Himalayan ranges, Bhutan, India, and southern Tibet. The Himalayan Monal enjoys a diet that includes fruits, seeds and insects. These birds’ breeding process commences at two years of age.
State Animal
The Alpine Musk deer is the state animal of Uttarakhand. This deer kind mostly lives in alpine scrub and forested areas, mainly in the mountains of southern Asian areas, especially in the Himalayas. These deer somewhat resemble small deer in their hind legs, which are longer than their front legs, with a stocky build. They are about 90 cm in length, around 60 cm in height, and weigh between 8 and 17 kgs. It has a brown coat with yellow and black spots. This deer does not have horns, but the males have a little tail.
State Tree
The Uttarakhand state tree is Rhododendron, or what we like to call ” Buransh ” in India. This tree is either deciduous or evergreen and is found chiefly in Asia. The tree is a genus of small to large trees and shrubs. The leaves of these trees are arranged spirally, with leaf size of around 1 to 2 cm. Rhododendron is considered the largest genus in the Ericaceae family, with around 1024 species. Rhododendron trees are saturated with medicinal values. The flowers on this tree are light red in areas at around 11000 feet and deep red in higher altitudes. The flowers of this tree are famous for syrups and beverages produced from them.
State Flower
The state flower of the state of Uttarakhand is Saussurea obvallata or what we like to call in India “Brahma Kamal”. This tree is native to the Himalayas in Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal, and southwest China. Flowers on these trees bloom in monsoons. The flowers are purple and hidden from view in yellowish papery layers. These layers provide the protection needed from the cold environment. The flowers on these trees are visible from July to September. The roots of Saussurea obvallata can be applied to cuts and bruises and work as a local medicine. It is easy to spot the state bird of Uttarakhand on these trees.
State Instrument
Dhol is the state instrument of Uttarakhand. This instrument is a popular and ancient instrument used in Uttarakhand. Dhol playing helped entertain soldiers on the battlefield earlier. The instrument was declared the state instrument of Uttarakhand in 2015. Dhol is considered to invoke deities and is one of the primary instruments used in Indian functions. It invokes goddesses and gods and is used in prayers. Made of a double-sided barrel drum, the size of this instrument varies from region to region. The instrument is played using sticks made of cane or wood.
