Functional teams

The functional management includes all the team members under the same department with different responsibilities. The manager’s role is most important under functional teams as he has to be responsible for every task, and all the reports have been reported to him.

Cross-Functional teams

These types of teams are made up of individuals from various departments. This team handles a particular task that requires different individuals so that different skills and expertise have been used.

Self -Managed teams

Under this type of team, employees of the same organisation work together to achieve a common objective without a manager. These teams have the absence of a particular manager, supervisor, or leader. They share responsibilities and leadership among themselves to fulfil an organisation’s goals.

Virtual Teams

This type of team is made of individuals who complete their respective tasks by working from different physical locations and who use virtual means for collaboration to achieve the goal of an organisation.

The role of a team manager is to ensure that the given task is managed smoothly with the given budget, efficient planning, assigning different duties to different team members, and handling the team by motivating the team members and monitoring the performance carefully and patiently.

One of the most important responsibilities is to remove all kinds of barriers that bring hurdles to completing tasks. For example, suppose team members have any issues among themselves. In that case, it is the role and responsibility of the manager to resolve these issues professionally so that there is no hindrance in the way of fulfilling the organisational goals.

Skills Required in Team Management

To succeed, team management needs to have a good manager with practical team management skills and good leadership qualities. Leadership is also one of the most important parts of team management. It can be defined as the process of influencing the behaviour and performance of others in a group’s efforts towards the achievement of specific goals in a given situation. 

Furthermore, it is an interactive process between the leader and their followers, i.e., team members. During these interactions, the manager provides guidance and support to their team members in accomplishing both individual and organisational tasks.

Another effective team management skill required is motivation. Motivation creates the desire among the employees to perform their respective jobs to the best of their abilities. In addition, it induces people to work hard to achieve the organisation’s common goals. 

Besides leadership and motivation, one of the most basic and essential effective team management skills required to play their role and responsibility smoothly is efficient planning and organising. 

Planning involves the selection of objectives, procedures, and policies for a particular team. A practical skill required for a manager under planning also involves the right decision-making and problem-solving elements to overcome the barrier.

On the other hand, the organisation involves combining the work that individuals or groups have to perform with facilities necessary for its execution and accomplishment of the goals of an organisation.

We should understand that when all the team members work collectively with efficiency, uniformly, and through team spirit, the target is achieved on time with desired results. Team management is essential for the success of any organisation or company.
