There’s no doubt that space exploration is an important topic. And when it comes to space exploration, India is quickly becoming a world leader. In this blog post, we will provide a comprehensive guide to Space Centres and Space Agencies in India. We will list out all the major space centres in India, as well as all the major space agencies in India. So if you’re interested in learning more about Indian space exploration, then this is the blog post for you!
ISRO
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is the space agency of the Government of India headquartered in Bangalore. It was founded by Vikram Sarabhai on 15 August 1969. ISRO built India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, which was launched into orbit by the Soviet Union on 19 April 1975.
Indian Space Centre
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has three centres:
– Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It is the lead centre for launch vehicle and spacecraft programmes.
– ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC), Bengaluru, Karnataka was established in 1972. It is the lead centre for spacecraft and satellite programmes.
– The space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad, Gujarat was established in 1972. It is responsible for space technology applications and remote sensing programmes. SAC has its own ground station called the Indian National Satellite System Ground Station (INSAT GS) at Hassan district of Karnataka state to control and manage the Indian National Satellite (INSAT) series of satellites.
ISRO also has two ground stations:
– Indian National Satellite System Ground Station (INSAT GS) at Hassan district of Karnataka state to control and manage the Indian National Satellite (INSAT) series of satellites.
– Satellite Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (STC&CN), Bangalore, Karnataka to control and monitor planetary exploration missions like Chandrayaan-I and Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM).
Space Agencies in India
ISRO is not the only space agency in India. There are six other space agencies:
– Antrix Corporation Limited, Bangalore, Karnataka was incorporated as a private limited company on 28 January 1992 under the Companies Act, 1956 to commercially exploit the products and services of ISRO.
– National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Hyderabad, Telangana was established as a service provider for satellite data to users from different sectors in India under the Department of Space (DOS). It was also designated as a repository of all remote sensing data acquired by Indian satellites.
– National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL), Gadanki, Andhra Pradesh was established in 1992. It is an autonomous research institute under the Department of Space (DOS).
– North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NeSAC), Umiam Meghalaya was set up by DOS in 2000 to develop space science and technology applications for the people of North-East states.
– Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL), Chandigarh, Punjab was established in 1969 and is under DOS since 1972. It functions as a nodal centre for the design, development and fabrication of integrated circuits
– The development and Educational Communication Unit (DECU), Ahmedabad, Gujarat was established in 1985. It is an attached office of SAC and functions as the nodal centre for the development, production and distribution of educational multimedia programmes in Indian languages.
List of Space Centres in India
Here is the list of space centres in India. ISRO has a total of seven space centres:

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is the space agency of the Government of India headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Its primary objective is to develop space technology and its application.
Important Points on Space Centres in India:
- One of the first space centres in India was established in 1962 by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This organisation is responsible for all aspects of space-related research. ISRO is one of the leading space agencies in the world and has been responsible for many firsts, including launching an Indian spacecraft into orbit around Mars on September 24th 2014.
- The headquarters for ISRO is located in Bangalore where it was founded by Dr Vikram Sarabhai who was a visionary scientist from Ahmedabad. ISRO has a total of 21 centres spread across India and they are responsible for various aspects of space research such as manufacturing satellites, developing launch vehicles or even tracking them once they have been launched into orbit around Earth or beyond.
- ISRO is an autonomous body under the Government of India which provides ample support to its activities by providing funds and infrastructure. The organisation is also assisted by a number of other government departments and agencies in India which include the Department of Space, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL).
Conclusion
India has a long and proud history in the field of space exploration. Indian astronauts have participated in missions aboard Russian, European, and American spacecraft, and the country’s Space Centre and Space Agency are both highly respected institutions.
