Indian lakes are either natural or manmade. Most of them are reservoirs that store water from nearby rivers for use during summer and dry seasons. This article highlights the concept of lakes along with the list of lakes in India.

What are Lakes?

Lakes are inland bodies of water with fresh, brackish and saline water. They cover 16.2% of the world’s land area. They can be found in various forms such as natural lakes, ponds or manmade lakes and reservoirs. Lakes are formed due to tectonic activity, erosion or collapse in areas where the Earth’s crust has been stretched so fractures and faults occur easily.

India’s largest freshwater lakes:

An example of a collapsed lake is the former Dakshin Sagar. One of the largest freshwater lakes in India is the Mansarovar Lake in Tibet.

(2) Vembanad,

 (3) Rann of Kutch and

(4) The Great Rann of Kutch.

There are many uses of lakes such as:
