A Brief History: Nobel Prize

The Nobel Prize is named after Alfred Nobel, a Swedish industrialist, and benefactor. Alfred Nobel made his testament on November 27, 1895, leaving the majority of his income to a series of prizes in material science, science, physiology or medication, writing, and harmony – the Nobel Prizes. Sveriges Riksbank (Sweden’s central bank) established The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Financial Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in 1968.

This award is given each year in the following areas of science: physics, chemistry, medicine, economics, peace and literature. These honors are awarded to deserving individuals for their humanitarian contributions in their respective disciplines. It is internationally acclaimed for their work.

Nations all across the world have Nobel laureates. India, a country with over 1.3 billion people and a significant number of colleges, has produced a decent number of Nobel laureates in all honor classes over the years. These Nobel laureates of India are referenced in the beneath list, including the individuals who are brought into the world in India but later changed their citizenship. In India, the following individuals have received the Nobel Prize:

  1. Rabindranath Tagore: Literature (1913)

In 1913, when India was still under British rule, Rabindranath Tagore gave recognition to India on the world map not only by achieving the country’s first Nobel Prize but also by becoming the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Tagore was a poet, artist, and thinker and won the award largely for his collection of poems, Gitanjali, with the theme of devotion.

  1. CV Raman: Physics(1930)

CV Raman, also known as Sri Chandrashekhara Venkata Raman, was an Indian physicist, born in Tamil Nadu and the second Indian Nobel Laureate. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his outstanding contribution to the field of light dissipation. His research, known as the Raman Effect or Raman Scattering, earned him the distinction of becoming the first Asian to be recognized for scientific achievements. He found out through his research why the sky is blue.

  1. Har Gobind Khurana: Medicine(1968)

Har Gobind Khurana was born in Raipur during British rule and later He shifted to the United States and changed his citizenship into American. He was a biochemist and for his work in hereditary exploration, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. He shared this honor with his colleague.

  1. Mother Teresa: Peace(1979)

Mother Teresa was granted the Nobel peace Prize in 1979. She was the Head of Missionaries of charities in Calcutta, India. In Calcutta, Mother Teresa and her assistants built houses for homeless people, nursing homes for outcasts and health centers for the dangerously ill. Mother Teresa’s organization was also involved in humanitarian activities in several parts of the world. She was known worldwide for her good and kind work.

  1. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar: Physics(1983)

Chandrashekhar was raised in Lahore, India, and spent the majority of his life in the United States, where he eventually became a resident. He was an astrophysicist and, as it turns out, CV Raman’s nephew. He shares the Nobel Prize in Physics with a colleague for their work on the formation and development of stars. In 1983, he was included in the list of Nobel Prize laureates in India.

  1. Amartya Sen: Economics(1998)

Amartya Sen was born in Kolkata and now spends his time in the UK AND US teaching in universities. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on welfare economics in the field of Economics. Amartya Sen was the fourth Indian to achieve this honor of the Nobel Prize to India.

  1. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan: Chemistry(2009)

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan was born in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, India. A physicist and subatomic scholar who shared the Nobel Prize in Science in 2009 with American biophysicist and natural chemist Thomas Steitz and Israeli protein crystallographer Ada Yonath for his research on nuclear design and capability of cell particles known as ribosomes.

  1. Kailash Satyarthi: Peace(2014)

Bachpan Bachao Andolan, an NGO, was started by Kailash Satyarthi for child rights and to end child labor. Satyarthi was awarded the best Nobel Peace Prize in 2015 for his efforts to eliminate child labor and child trafficking. To date, he has rescued almost 88,000 children from child labor and slavery. Kailash Satyarthi shared the prestigious award with Malala Yousafzai.

  1. Abhijit Banerjee: Economics(2019)

Abhijit Banerjee, his wife Esther Duflo, and American Michael Kremer were awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for their pioneering approach to alleviating global poverty. Banerjee is the son of two financial aspects professors, and he began his education at Kolkata’s South Point School before moving on to Administration School. He has stayed and worked in the United States since the 1980s.

Notwithstanding these nine victors from India, there have been two additional champs who were brought into the world in India. Rudyard Kipling, writer of the Wilderness Book was brought into the world in Mumbai in 1865. He won the Nobel Prize in Writing for his work in 1907 and was the main English-language essayist to get the prize. Ronald Ross was brought into the world in Almora in English India and won the Nobel Prize in Medication for his outstanding work in the field of jungle fever.

Conclusion

Over the years, many Indians have made exceptional contributions towards science and have achieved many awards but only 9 personalities were able to achieve the Nobel Prize and made India proud.
