A Brief Note on Famous Places in Sikkim

Sikkim is a state in the northeast part of India. It shares its borders with Tibet in the north and northeast, Nepal in the west,  Bhutan in the east, and West Bengal in the south. The largest city of Sikkim is Gangtok, which is also its capital. Sikkim tourism has a dramatic touch of beauty added by the mount Kanchenjunga which is one of the highest peaks and part of the Himalayas. Sikkim also hosts a wide variety of wildflowers, glaciers, and alpine meadows which make it more scenic than most states. Among the famous places to visit while in Sikkim, the foremost is the capital city – Gangtok.

Gangtok

The capital city Gangtok accounts for its importance in the cities of the state. It is incredibly beautiful, exuberant, and blessed with a culture and history that is adjunct to the pride of Sikkim. In the month of March-May, the fragrance of rhododendron mixes in the air of the city and attracts many visitors. The city satisfies everybody as a hill station with a perfect blend of culture and modernisation. Some of the religious sites in the city are Enchey Monastery, Ganesh Tok, Do Drul Chorten Rumtek Monastery, etc. For a more magnificent look from a higher altitude, visit Ganesh Tok and Tashi viewpoint for the enticing aerial view. 

Tsomgo Lake

Tsomgo Lake is situated approximately 40 km far from the city of Gangtok, which makes it a 2-hour journey. It’s also among the very famous places in Sikkim. It’s an astonishingly beautiful lake of the glacier which is depicted by its name ‘Tsogmo’ which means ‘Source of Water’. The lake is also among the highest situated lakes in India which adds more pride to Sikkim tourism. The flora and animals found around the lake include  Primulas, yellow and blue poppies, Irish, Yaks and Ponies, and migratory ducks – Brahminy. The lake reflects the snow-covered mountains present around it, the most appropriate time to visit the lake is from January to March. 

Nathula Pass

Nathula Pass is approximately 53 km from the capital city, Gangtok. This is an important place in Sikkim from tourism as well as political point of view as it joins India to Tibet. This is also why there’s a beautiful blend of cultures of both the countries in this place. A famous trade market is located on the border, known as the Sherathang. This market has a treasure of sovereigns and Tibetan items, one can buy to take back home. A place known as the Kupup, located near Nathula Pass gives tourists an out-of-the-world experience; the place is always located under the clouds and makes you feel like you are in the sky. 

Pelling

Pelling is again one of the famous tourist spots in Sikkim after Gangtok. It attracts thousands of travellers and is a monastery for those who look for peace in the lap of nature and enticing views. The town is heaven for trekkers. The journey to Pelling from other main attractions is very easy as it is approximately 131 km from Gangtok and 73 km from Darjeeling. The best time to visit Pelling is always between December and May because one can enjoy winter, spring, and summer at the same time. The local north-eastern cuisine is also a point of attraction for this place. 

Kanchenjunga Base Camp

Kanchenjunga Base Camp is among the ways to enjoy and learn the true spirit of the culture of Sikkim. The complete journey from the camp will take a person to an approximate height of 14,000 ft. above the sea level. Kanchenjunga is at the third position on the list of world’s highest peaks and going on the trek of this huge mountain range is something everyone has on their bucket list. The Kanchenjunga trek starts from Dzongri, and is the final road that makes a lap around the mountain. It’s a thrilling experience for all to adventure so close to the border of India and China.

Yumthang Valley Of Flowers

Yumthang valley is a major attraction for tourists in Sikkim and is located approximately 128 km from Gangtok. The meadows, the yaks grazing by the side of the Teesta River, heavenly mountains scenically located around numerous hot springs, all of this pull the tourist towards the valley. The whole valley is covered with flowers and is located at an altitude of 11,000 feet above sea level. The best time to visit the valley is from late February to March, as at this time, the locals celebrate the Losar festival. To see the blooming rhododendrons and the valley at its peak glory, the best time to visit it is between April and June.  

Teesta River

Teesta River flows tirelessly and is a must-visit spot for tourists in Sikkim. People visit the river even when it is completely frozen during winter and provides a magnificent view to the seekers or those who visit in the summer to enjoy activities like river rafting and kayaking on its clear water. The point where the Teesta River meets with its tributary, i.e., the Rangeet River and the Dikchu bridge are also some famous tourist spots.
