ACIDS, BASES AND SALTS USED IN DAILY LIFE

Not only in the field of chemistry but in our daily life we experience an innumerable number of applications of acids, salts and bases in several fields.

In this study, the focus is given on the applications of acids and bases as well as salts that are used in daily lives. In order to delve into the study, a vivid picture needs to be drawn of what acids, bases and salts are. Moreover, the properties respective to the salts, bases and acids are also required to be considered. In conducting the study, significant knowledge will be gathered about the pH levels of the elements that show the properties of acids, bases and salts. Several pieces of evidence are there that show that acids, as well as bases, are essential in sustaining life on earth. Several reactions occur that explains the need for the elements that represent acids, bases and salts

Understanding of Acids, bases and salts

Based on the definition of scientists, the acids are referred to as substances of inorganic nature and mostly known as mineral acids that effectively change the taste of the water into sour. In addition to these, if the blue litmus paper is dipped into acid then it turns the colour of the litmus paper into red. Bases are just the opposite as they are quite bitter in taste and they change the taste of the water into bitter. Furthermore, if a red litmus paper is dipped into the base then it turns the litmus paper into the blue. Salts are known to be derived from the successive reaction between an acidic and a basic element. Periodic table is quite effective in showcasing the nature of the acids and bases of all the chemical elements.

 What are acids?

In chemical terms, it is noticed that the acids are termed to be chemical species that give away protons or ions of hydrogen and thereby accept electrons. It is also well noticed that the acids mostly consist of atoms of bonded hydrogen that dissolves into the water. After dissociating into the water it results in forming anions and cations within the water. Moreover, the pH level that is determined by the acids represents a value that is less than 7, where 7 is considered to be neutral. Some examples of acids are acetic acids that are known as vinegar, lactic acid that is found in milk, sulphuric acid and many more.

 What are bases?

Bases are as well required in the field of chemistry as they are used to balance the acidic solutions and they are just opposite to the acidic elements. The bases are substances that are bitter in taste and mostly neutralize the acids thereby, reacting to the ions of hydrogen. In reacting with the acids the bases result in forming salts. The bases include several metals such as carbonates, hydroxides and oxides. In addition to this, the bases that are soluble in nature are known as alkalis and one of the examples is sodium hydroxide.

  Properties of acids and bases

Properties of acids are as follows,

  • Depending on the taste the acids are sour in taste and on the posers if smelled it “frequently burns the nose”.
  • In respect to the texture, the acids are quite sticky.
  • In terms of reactivity, the acids often react with metals in order to form hydrogen or H2.

Properties of bases are as follows,

  • In terms of the reactivity levels, the bases mainly react with several forms of oils and fats.
  • Based on the taste the bases are bitter in taste and have no smell.

Application of acids and bases in our daily lives

In every instance of our lives, we evidence the application of acids and based on several fields such as medicinal fields, industrial purposes, homely needs, production and preservation foods and many more. For medicinal purposes we take up medicines like antacids; moreover, we get notions of HCL or hydrochloric acids in the gastric juices and it helps in actively breaking down food. “Polyvinyl Chloride” is used to make pharmaceutical drugs with a combination of hydrochloric acids. In our toothpaste, we make use of sodium fluoride that is basic in nature.

How do acids and bases affect our daily lives?

A very crucial role is played by acids, salts and bases as they help in the digestion of what we eat and assist in better digestion. It also helps in maintaining a balanced ph level that is quite essential for sustaining life. In several cleaning products, the usage of acids and bases are quite evidenced.

Conclusion

In concluding the study, it needs to be understood that an in-depth exploration has been conducted that resulted in determining the usages that are acids, bases and salts. Certain common salts, acids as well bases are discussed that determine the necessity of their application in life. The definitions are also explained for acids, bases and salts we evidence in our lives.
