Geometric progression is a sequence of numbers in which the ratio between successive terms is constant. In GP questions, the first term is always greater than the second term and the third term is always greater than the second term.

The difference between the first term and second term is called a common difference. If one number in GP questions is multiplied by another number, the new sequence is still a GP. If one number in AP questions is divided by another number, the new sequence is still an AP.

– graphical method

– tabular method

Graphical Method

The graphical method is used to solve GP questions and the tabular method is used to solve AP questions.

– draw a line graph with the first term on the x-axis and the difference on the y-axis.

– plot a point with coordinates (first term, difference).

– draw a straight line through the plotted point.

– to get the next term, add the difference between successive terms to each previous term.

– read the value at the x-axis corresponding to the next term.

Tabular method

The tabular method is as follows:

– write the first two terms of the sequence in a table.

– write the difference between successive terms in a column next to the corresponding terms.

What is rank order correlation?

Descending order questions are those in which the numbers in the list are arranged from the largest to the smallest.

Multiple ranked data 

This consists of a list of numbers in which each number is ranked more than once.

There are two types of multiple ranked data questions:

– odd-order questions

– even order questions. Odd order questions are those in which the numbers are arranged from smallest to largest and then back again.

Even order questions are those in which the numbers are arranged in pairs.

Paired comparisons 

These are a list of numbers in which each number is compared with another number.

There are two types of paired comparisons questions:

– direct comparison questions

– indirect comparison questions.

Direct comparison questions are those in which the numbers in the list are compared directly with each other.

Indirect comparison questions are those in which the numbers in the list are compared with a common reference point.
