Reason for Downfall of Gupta Empire

The decline of the Gupta Empire started under the rule of Skandangupta who was the grandson of Chandragupta II. Due to Skandagupta’s vindictive behaviour, his empire was devoid of money and resources. The Huna people, well known as Huns, attacked Gupta territory and damaged the empire hugely. This era declined in almost 550 CE when it was divided into regional states after inventions from north, west, and east. There were huge dissensions and conflicts among the royal families due to which the rule became weak. In the sixth century, Huns effectively occupied Gandhara, Punjab, and Gujarat as well as Malwa and this weakened the practices of the Gupta Empire.

In this scenario, the emperors started to follow the practices of Buddhism rather than Hinduism and these practices also weakened the empire hugely. Guptas shifted their focus from military conquests and empire building which caused the fall of the Gupta Empire. The empire of Guptas has been effectively followed by weak rulers and endless attacks from native rulers as well as foreign rulers declined this era. There was a requirement for effective unity and resources. The endless attacks of Huns weakened the empire and caused the fall of the Gupta Empire.

There was a lack of an equipped large army and during this era, administration was decentralized. Decentralization made the government of the Gupta period weak. There were multiple reasons such as the rise of “Yashodharman of Malwa”, Huna invasions, as well as competition from Vakatakas that caused the fall of the Gupta Empire. The last ruler of this empire was Skandagupta. Tormana who was the first ruler of Hun ruled “northern India up to Malwa” in central India. After the death of Tormana, his son Mihirkula destroyed the empire of Guptas and ruled for almost thirty years. The emperors of the Gupta Empire faced different challenges in the fields of economics as well as politics due to the rules of weak rulers.

Economic and Political Factors of Gupta Empire

Multiple reasons caused the fall of the Gupta Empire such as feudal states, trade decreased, weaknesses in Throne, as well as invaders. Skandagupta who was the last emperor of the Gupta Empire was accepted the throne around 455 A.D. Political Factors were responsible for the decline of Gupta Empire as there was an inability to consolidate the Raj princes, and due to decentralization, there were no Indian leaders who tried to bring together the subcontinent. Almost 480 CE, the Huns launched a huge invasion to decline the Gupta empire and they successfully captured the northwestern segment of this empire.

There were also several political reasons for the fall of the Gupta Empire. The relocation of the establishment of Silk weavers from the city of Gujarat to Malwa in almost 473 AD and their non-productive occupation depicts that there was not effective and much demand for produced clothes. The effective benefits from the trade of Gujarat gradually disappeared. Internal rebellions, foreign inventions, as well as dynastic dissensions caused the fall of the Gupta Empire. In the middle times of the fifth century, the emperors made despairing attempts in terms of maintaining their gold currency through decreasing the content of authentic gold which is one of the economic reasons for the fall of the Gupta Empire.

The emperors faced different economic challenges due to the huge loss of “western India” in the fifth century.  The economic reasons for the fall of the Gupta Empire were trade with the Mediterranean and loss of western India. The arrival of the culture of Buddhism developed various challenges for the Gupta emperors. The factors of the failure in establishing land reform as well as flooding and crop failure were also the economic reasons for the fall of the Gupta Empire. Natural disasters also damaged and affected the economy and the quality of life.
