The earth is divided into three zones based on the heat received by the sun into the torrid zone ,temperate zone and the frigid zone.
Torrid Zone
The word torrid is derived from the Latin word ‘Torride’ that means scorch or patch. It means something that is parched with sun rays or something that is hot .
The zone that receives direct sun rays throughout the year and experiences max heat is known as Torrid Zone. Torrid zone is an area that is between the Tropic of cancer in the northern hemisphere till the tropic of Capricorn in the southern hemisphere.
Temperate Zone
The word temperate is derived from the Latin word ‘temperatus’. The meaning of the word is not too hot nor cold . It is a balanced climate.
The temperate zone lies between the tropic of cancer and the arctic circle in the northern hemisphere while between the tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic circle in the southern hemisphere.
Frigid Zone
The word Frigid is derived from the Latin word ‘Frigidus’ that means cold. This zone receives minimum sunlight as the rays are slanting towards this area. The area is between the arctic circle and north pole in the northern hemisphere while between the Antarctic circle and the South pole in the southern hemisphere. This xine is extremely cold due to lack of sunlight.
History
The concept of the heat zones was first given by a scholar named Parmenides whose theory was modified by Aristotle. According to their theory earth is divided into three climatic zones based on the location from the sun. They divided the earth based on the rays from the sun. Torrid as the zone near equator that is extremely hot and is not habitable while the frigid as a zine of extreme cold wherein it covered with dense snow . According to them the temperatures which are just perfect neither cold nor hot.
Countries in Torrid zone
The major areas under the torrid zone is as follows ,-:
- Western Sahara
- Libya
- Queensland
- New Caledonia
- Mexico
- Brazil
- Guyana
- Sudan
- Parts of Polynesia, Micronesia
- Egypt
- Central and East Africa
- Saudi Arabia
- Southern India
- Bangladesh
- Maldives
Countries in Temperate zone
The countries that lie the temperate zone are listed as follows-:
- Europe
- North Mexico
- Northern India
- Pakistan
- Saudi Arabia
- United Arab Emirates
- New South Wales
- South Africa
- New Zealand
- Bangladesh North region
- Western Australia
- Iran
- Turkey
- Iraq
- Bahrain
- Afghanistan
Countries in Frigid zone
The countries that are present in Frigid zone are listed as follows-:
- Denmark
- Alaska
- Norway
- Finland
- Sweden
- Russia
- Canada certain areas like Yukon
- Antarctica
Differences between Torrid and Temperate zone
- Location -The Torrid zone lies near the equator between the tropic of cancer till the tropic of Capricorn while the temperate Zone lies between the tropic of cancer and the arctic circle in northern hemisphere while between the tropic of Capricorn and Antarctic in the southern hemisphere
- Torrid word means hot while the temperate word means moderate
- Heat / temperature difference- The Torrid zone has high temperature being near the equator while the temperature zone has moderate temperature
- Rainfall-The Torrid zone experiences high rainfall while the presence of moderate rainfall is the feature for temperature regions
- Sun rays ;The area torrid zone is known as tropics and receives direct sun rays or vertical rays while the temperate receives slanting sun rays
- Insolation- the tropics have high insolation while the temperate receive less insolation
- The sun is over the Tropics twice a year while in the case of temperate regions the sun is never overhead
Conclusion
The earth is divided into three heat zones based on the heat received by them from the sun.The three heat zones are the Torrid zone , Temperate zone and the Frigid zone. These zones are hot , moderate and extremely cold respectively due to the difference of heat received. The areas lying near the equator that is the torrid is hot due to direct sun rays and by the time they reach the frigid zone the rays get skanyed and the Area receive less heat due to which the area is covered with snow .The earliest classification of heat zones was given by Parmenides and his theory was taken forward by Aristotle. The heat received further changes to the vegetation , climate , livelihoods and the rainfall and the factors associated with the area. Thus studying heat zones gives a glimpse about various factors about different countries in these areas.
