Space is considered to be infinite, constantly expanding beyond what the naked eye could possibly see. Our solar system is also a part of space, present in the milky way galaxy. With the current technology that we humans have invented, fully exploring our own solar system, much less the whole galaxy, is complicated and time-consuming. From our neighbor planets such as Mars and Venus to far away giants such as Jupiter and Saturn, our solar system is fascinating.
Things that you didn’t know about our solar system:
Mars sunset is blue in color:
Scientists at NASA believe that the sunset from our neighboring planet would appear to be bluish in color. Fine dust particles on the red planet would make the sun appear to be bluer in color when seen from the red soil of the planet Mars. This happens as the color at the time of the sunset is the most perceptible color to the human eye.
A day is longer than a year on the planet Venus:
This must confuse most people but hear us out. A day is defined as the time a planet takes to complete one rotation on its own axis, whereas a year is the time duration a planet takes to complete one revolution around the sun. Venus spins on its own axis extremely slowly. It’s said that the planet takes 243 earth days to complete one rotation around its axis. The planet takes 225 days to complete one revolution around our star, the sun. Hence, a day is much longer than a year on the planet Venus!
Jupiter’s moon has huge volcanic eruptions present on it:
Jupiter is a planet in our solar system, and its moon IO has huge structures present on it which undergo volcanic eruptions. The surface of the moon is loaded with volcanoes and is considered to be one of the most destructive and active moons in the solar system. The volcanic eruptions are a result of the huge forces that the moon experiences due to the gravitational and magnetic pull of the planet Jupiter. It’s extremely hard to predict the exact location of the volcanoes on the moon IO. Scientists are still figuring out how heat is transferred within the moon.
The great red spot of Jupiter is shrinking:
Due to its comparable size to a star, many people ask whether Jupiter is a planet as it is humongous. Our solar system’s most violent storm happens on Jupiter inside its great red spot. The storm is hundreds of kilometers huge in size. Lately, scientists have noticed that the spot has been shrinking.
Mass of the sun is 99% of all mass in our solar system:
The sun is a huge star, and it overshadows any other object in our solar system. Even huge planets such as Jupiter and Saturn are merely grains of sand for our star. The sun is mostly made of hydrogen and helium and has an immense gravitational force to it due to its large mass. The mass of the sun is estimated to be more than 330000 times the mass of our very own planet, the Earth.
Conclusion
Space is endless and full of mysteries, with billions of galaxies and hundreds of billions of planets. The possibilities that space offers us are infinite. In our very own solar system, we have beautiful planets such as Saturn and then huge planets such as Jupiter. It will take a long time for us humans to fully explore our own solar system before we even think about exploring our galaxy. We have so much to learn and explore out there in space. For decades now, we have been searching for signs of life throughout space.
