Cotton textile is one of the largest textiles globally and helps grow countries economically. Like every other industry, the cotton industry also focuses on maximising profits by minimising the cost of production. India has been holding a monopoly worldwide in cotton textile since around 1500 BC. In India, people started mixing animal hair with cotton to make clothes in around 2000 BCE. There are two types of industries related to cotton textile: the production of cotton yarn and the production of cotton cloth.
Cotton Textile
It is really difficult to attain the exact date when cotton started to be used by people. Scientists have found a piece of cotton from 7000 years ago. After some time, people started experimenting with cotton as well. In India, people started mixing animal fur and hair into clothing in 2000 BC. At that time, everything was done with hands by handloom workers. Many countries other than India, like; China, Egypt, and Greece were in the race for cotton manufacturing and related products.
The location of any industry is a really big factor that affects the cost of any product
Availability of the goods we need in our production is a major factor; therefore, the location of the industry must be chosen carefully
The raw material used in cotton textile is easily transportable, but some places cannot grow cotton and have cotton mills
Most cotton textiles are located where cotton is easily available and has a specific advantage over others
The most common places in India which are known for the manufacturing of cotton are Ahmedabad, Solapur, Nagpur, Indore, and others
Cheap labour is another factor that should be considered before setting up an industry
The place where the industry is placed should have a labour facility at a cheaper rate as it requires quite a lot of workforce in making cotton/ cotton cloths
Transport is also a factor that one must consider as they need transport at every stage of their industry, like before manufacturing getting the raw material
Even after that, it is required to take the ready products to the supplier ahead
Distribution of Cotton Textile in India
As we all know, the cotton textile industry is widely spread globally, especially in India; hence, we can imagine how difficult the task would be to distribute cotton goods throughout the country. A major portion of the total production of cloth
Maharashtra is currently the greatest manufacturer of cotton yarn and cloth. It is 3rd in terms of the number of mills
Gujrat is the second leading in cotton yarn and cloth manufacturing and the number of mills
In Madhya Pradesh, the mills are focused on the cotton lot of the Western Malwa Plateau
Punjab had reached the top cotton-producing state in the country
Ludhiana and Amritsar in Punjab are the main centres of the cotton textiles industry
Delhi is a huge market for cotton textile because of its harsh summer weather
Problems faced by the Cotton Textile Industry
The problem of Raw Material
1) As we know, manufacturing of yarn and cloth is possible only when there is raw cotton, but the areas where production of raw cotton is less face a serious issue.
2) If the cost of raw cotton increases, there will be a lack of raw materials required for production.
3) Punjab has become the most cotton-producing state, but half of Punjab is in Pakistan, so improving relations with Pakistan would also ease importing cotton.
Problem of Power
1) For many years, the textile industry has faced a constant want of a satisfactory and steady supply of power
2) Load shedding and power cuts have impacted the industry.
Obsolete machinery
1) Cotton textile industry is one of the oldest industries in India, and most of the mines were set long back and have rusted old and need new fast and efficient technology.
2) Other countries like China have the new tech and enjoy the low cost of production and sell their products at a lower price, making it difficult for Indian products as they are at high prices due to old machinery.Lack of Investors
Other countries provide the investors with high returns as they have a low cost of production, which attracts them.
Conclusion
Even though India has held a monopoly worldwide, there is still much work to do. People face many problems in the industry that the government must resolve as soon as possible. After seeing so many difficulties faced by the industry-government have set up some schemes and programs to support the industry. The problems discussed above are very serious and need to be resolved by the government. These problems affect the industry in many negative ways. The lack of funds is one of the major problems which even the government cannot resolve without our support. It is we who need to contribute our best to support the industry by buying Indian products rather than imported ones.
